What happened in that 500 million dollar private credit story is just the tip of the iceberg.

India’s private credit industry touched 9 billion dollars in the first half of 2025. That is a 53 percent jump in deal volume. Everyone is chasing yield. Everyone is chasing growth. But few are asking what is actually backing those loans.

With banks pulling back on lending, private credit funds have rushed in to fill the gap. That might look good for short-term access to capital, but it turns dangerous when underwriting takes a back seat to deployment pressure.

Let’s call it what it is. This is shadow banking wearing new clothes. And if discipline doesn’t keep up with the deal flow, we are one bad quarter away from seeing serious cracks.

Private credit is not the problem. Unrestrained private credit is.

This is not just a banking story. It is a warning for funds, founders, and financiers chasing easy money.

Growth with discipline is the only kind that lasts.
