Legendary costume designer Kate Hawley has won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Frankenstein, adding an Academy Award to the BAFTA she received earlier for the same film. Long known for her visually rich work on large-scale productions, Hawley reunited with director Guillermo del Toro to create the dramatic, Gothic world of Frankenstein through costume.

Hawley stated that the starting point is always the script, which she often describes as her “Bible.” Del Toro’s screenplay gave her a powerful tone to work from one filled with atmosphere, symbolism, and emotion. The result was a wardrobe that moves between historical influence and fantasy, from Victor Frankenstein’s opulent velvet coats and striking jewellery to Elizabeth’s extraordinary gowns layered with veils, feathers, and celestial-inspired details.

Over the past two decades, Hawley has built a remarkable body of work across films like Pacific Rim, Suicide Squad, Crimson Peak, and The Lovely Bones. With Frankenstein, she once again proves how powerful costume design can be in shaping the mood, world, and visual storytelling of a film.
