PHILIPPINE AIRLINES TICKET NO #1

Leading up to its first flight, the then newly formed ‪@PhilippineAirlinesTV‬ (PAL) began advertising the inaugural service between Manila and Baguio on March 12, 1941. Hearing of the newly-opened airline from a friend, William Smith then went to purchase the very first ticket on the flight that would depart on March 15, 1941.

Smith's ticket would be No. 1 - PAL's first passenger.

PAL would operate that very first flight using a red Beechcraft Model 18 carrying 2 pilots and 5 passengers - Smith being one of them - on the 45 minute flight from Nielson Field (modern day Makati in Metro Manila) to Baguio. Upon arrival in Baguio, Smith also was the lone passenger on the return flight.

Today, Mr. Smith's ticket - Ticket No #1 - is on display at the PAL Museum in the airline's Lucio Tan Jr Complex.

Long a popular US airline, due to recent financial difficulties Southwest Airlines made major changes that have alienated some of its loyal customers.

Among the changes the airline made in 2025 was ending popular policies such as "bags fly free," and open seating.

While some argue that Southwest is losing its brand identity - which long differentiated it from other US carriers - the airline launched new interline partnerships with other global carriers including Taiwan-based China Airlines and EVA Air as well as Philippine Airlines.

Now in 2026, Southwest will continue to make major changes. An example is recent reports and talks that the airline is adding its own Premium seating.

As much as Southwest was an inspiration for many budget airlines around the world, its moves are in line with how LCCs have adapted to compete with the bigger airlines.
