Jesus, You are The Word made flesh and You dwelt amongst the neighbourhood. You know all that we will go through, and Your words ring true through it all.
I pray this record is a testament to You. Like an altar built in the desert for us sojourners, may these songs help us remember what You have done on this journey home. May they help us thank You for Your unyielding and unchanging faithfulness, and may they become sustenance for the days ahead.
My ultimate prayer is that ‘The Reminder,’ would cause you to look again, and consecrate. That you would see God’s care for you and cause you to trust that He knows what you need. He has spoken the words that will sustain you no matter where The Way goes, He sees you and Jesus is the One faithfully leading each of us through.
“It is a trustworthy statement: For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him; If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny us; If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” 2 Timothy 2:11-13
It all started Thursday, August 17th, 2023. I drove up to LA to write with my friend Lindsey Sweat & Davy Nathan, who I had not met yet.
Davy started playing an idea he had received in the middle of the night. Awakened, he had gone to the piano & sang, ‘How I love You, how I love You, how I love You Lord, I live my life to tell You, how I love You Lord.’ I had always wanted to sing those 3 words to Jesus in my own song & couldn’t believe I was getting to in such a beautiful way.
The rest of the song wrote itself. I played the demo almost every day after we wrote it, tucking it away in my heart knowing I wanted to put it on the next record.
A year later I played the song, still in demo form, for my Dad in Australia, around my childhood kitchen table. At the end, he looked up with tears in his eyes & I knew, even if it was just for my Dad & I, this was going on the record.
When creating an album, what can be hard to navigate is when you believe a song has something but not everyone agrees. I felt I had to fight for this one up until mid-2024 when I found my people who fought for it too.
When I first played it for Austin, my producer, his chair didn’t turn around at first. It had taken him back, to the old-school gospel hymns of his childhood and had struck a chord. Ever since that day, he has been committed to this song.
I also want to publicly thank Riley, my A&R. She was thrown headfirst into this project towards the end & came alongside, not skipping a beat. Thank you for loving this one with me.
With no click & 2 takes, we worshipped Jesus singing ‘how I love You’ back to Him. After a quick reset, before the 3rd and final take, we ( Austin & Bernie ) talked about Jesus’ Presence and the gift of His Spirit. In the end, we couldn’t speak, & with tears flowing down our cheeks, we hit record.

SIMPLE PHRASE ❤️ out now!
