Nobody Is Going to Give You Permission

Somebody in here is sitting on a finished project right now that they have not posted. I know it. And the reason is always the same. You are looking at that one spot where the grain tore out, or the joint that is a hair off, and you are thinking you are not ready yet.

You are never going to be ready. That feeling does not go away. I am seven years in and I am still hypercritical about everything I've built. The difference is I stopped letting it stop me.

Here is the thing about those flaws. You see them because you built it. You know exactly where to look and you know your own skill level. Your customer does not. They are looking at something handmade that somebody in their town actually made with their hands. That is the whole appeal. And do not you dare point the flaw out to them either. I have watched people talk themselves right out of a sale by apologizing for work the customer was already happy with.

Some of my first projects, I look back and wonder how I sold them. But I sold them. And the money from those paid for the material for the next ones, and that is how this works.

The only thing separating a woodworker from a non-woodworker is that you cut wood and put it together. That is it. Not the shop size. Not the tool wall. Not the skill level you think you need before you are allowed to charge money.

So here is your challenge. Take the thing that is sitting in your shop right now, take a decent staged photo of it, and post it today. Let people know that you make these and they are for sale.

That first step out of the boat is the scariest one you will ever take. It is also the only one that matters.
