The guidance counsellor students had just chosen as one of their best teachers

Days before she was killed, Tiwaporn Wanich had been named one of Thepsirin Nonthaburi School’s outstanding teachers. The students chose her themselves.

Known throughout the school as Kru Muay, she worked in the guidance department—the place students turn when something is wrong. Course selections, university applications, problems at home, and the things they cannot say in a classroom of forty.

It is a job with no fixed syllabus and no final exam. Whether it is done well depends largely on whether young people trust the person doing it.

Her students’ votes suggest they trusted her.

Shortly before the attack, the school announced the award on its Facebook page. Acting Capt Nattanapong Thongplub, the school director, congratulated three educators recognised under the Office of the Basic Education Commission’s outstanding teacher scheme for the 2025 academic year.

All three were chosen by student vote: Tiwaporn Wanich from guidance, Sarinrak Nilapaka from mathematics, and Waralee Sanphakitchanchai from science and technology.

Tiwaporn was among those killed when a student opened fire at the school.

Five teachers died, including a deputy director. More than 30 people were injured, nine of them seriously.

In the coming weeks, there will be a long argument about firearms, school security and the warning signs that may have been missed. That argument matters, and it must happen.

But the first thing worth recording is simpler.

A teenager walked into a school, and the people who died were among the adults whose job was to care for him and every student like him.

One of them had just been told—by the students themselves—that she was good at it.

The school will remain closed from 10 to 14 August.

Opponents argue that such a change would create legal complications involving inheritance, child custody, and family law.

For now, Thai law recognizes marriage between two people only, and no legislation has been passed to change that.
