I have made several life-changing trips to see the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda and still want to go back. Seeing these magnificent animals in the wilds of the Virunga Volcanoes is an intimate, joyous experience. I hiked up the mountain for hours, sometimes hearing a silverback beating his chase as we drew closer. Our guides showed us how to behave around the gorillas and how to show respect to the Silverback; you are on the ground within feet of these beautiful creatures. You are allowed one precious hour with the group, watching them go about their business and in a way treat you as one of their own. I appreciate that they limit our time with these wild animals but easily could spend all day just watching this rare animal existing in its natural habitat.

Portrait of Charles with one of his offspring. This baby gorilla followed the Silverback everywhere imitating his every move. Gorgeous silverback, Charles took advantage of Ubumbwes Group's calmness to steal some females and to form his own group, Umubano group. Ubumwes was Charles' original family group.
