Creative Income & Publishing Made Simple

The Home Boss

The voice in your head is not the truth.

So many of the publishers I work with start out convinced they are not good enough, not ready, or not far enough along. And yet when I look at what they have actually created, I see something completely different.

Brave. Worthy. Enough.

You never know who needs the books you create. Keep going. 🌺

The Home Boss

This quote really spoke to me today:

PUSH — Persist Until Something Happens.

So many of you are in the early stages of your book or your business, and it can feel like nothing is happening yet. But it is. Every small step counts. Every push matters.

Stay with it. Your “something” is on its way.

Have you noticed KDP has had a bit of a tidy up lately?

A couple of quiet but genuinely useful changes have appeared in the dashboard over the past little while, and I wanted to flag them in case you missed them.

The first is the Rights & Pricing page. If you've ever found that section a bit cluttered and hard to read (you're not alone), it's had a clean-up. The layout is clearer now, which makes going through your pricing options feel a lot less overwhelming, especially if you're setting up in multiple territories.

The second is one I think a lot of you will find handy. You can now download your latest cover and manuscript directly from the KDP dashboard, without having to dig through old folders or contact support to track down a file. It's right there when you need it.

Neither of these changes is going to transform your publishing business overnight, but small improvements to the workflow do add up. Anything that saves you time or a support ticket is worth knowing about.

Have you spotted any other recent changes in KDP that you've found useful?

The Home Boss

I made a little gift for you.

As a thank you for following along here, for your kind comments, for the shares, and for being part of this community and always supporting me. It means more to me than you know. ❤️

You know when you're sitting there thinking: "What book should I create?" I hear that all the time and I've asked myself the same thing more times than I can count.

My answer has always been the same: write about something you know, something you're passionate about, or something you're curious about and want to explore. The best books come from that place.

But I wanted to make it easier for you to go from that idea to something you can start working on: so I created the Book Idea Generator.

You type in a topic and it gives you six niche book ideas you could actually publish. Children's books, low-content books, non-fiction guides, or a mix of all three. It takes about thirty seconds and it's completely free.

👉 thehomeboss.podia.com/the-book-idea-generator

💻 For the best experience, open it on a desktop browser. It runs on Claude, but you can use it with a free account.

Hope you find it helpful, I've already found a few ideas that I'm starting to work with. And if you're trying it, let me know. Would love to see what we're all cooking up next! 😄

Spring always feels like a new chapter.

A chance to start fresh.
To create something new.
To finally begin that idea you’ve been thinking about.

Wishing you a happy Easter.

Hi lovely people,
I just wanted to let you know that I’m heading away to Spain for a few days to visit family ❤️
I may be a little quieter than usual and might not be able to reply to comments or messages as quickly, but I’ll be back next Friday.
Thank you so much for your patience, and I hope you all have a beautiful week ✨

The Home Boss

Happy Monday Everyone! I hope you all had a nice weekend.

I just wanted to pop in and say this as we head into a new week: you don’t need everything perfectly mapped out to make real progress.

Whether you’re taking a tiny step or a big, brave leap — it all counts. It all moves you forward.

And honestly, most of us don’t feel clear or confident before we start. Those feelings usually show up once we’re already in motion.

So if you’re feeling a mix of excitement, nerves, or “I’m not sure what I’m doing”… you’re in good company. Just take the step that feels right for you today, whatever size it is.

I’d love to hear: what’s one step, big or small, you’re planning to take this week?

The Home Boss

Yesterday was my birthday, and I spent it eating too much cake in a village that looked like it had been painted by hand.

My husband took me to visit two of the prettiest spots I've ever seen nearby. The kind of places where you half expect someone to come out of a cottage with a tray of scones. We walked, we talked, and I had at least two coffees more than I needed.

A few days before that, I'd been to visit my children and granddaughter. Which was, without question, the best part of the whole celebration. There is nothing like watching a small person discover the world to put everything else into perspective.
It was a really good birthday.

But quiet, lovely days have a way of making you reflective.

And I found myself thinking about how much has changed since I started The Home Boss. I remember those early days clearly. Sitting at my computer, hoping that maybe, just maybe, someone would stumble across my videos and find them useful.

I didn't have a community then. I just had a lot of hope and a decent cup of tea.

Now I look around and I see all the people who've come through my courses and guides. The first-time publishers who almost talked themselves out of it. The writers getting back to something they'd set aside. The parents creating books for their own children. The people who had been waiting for the right moment, and finally decided this was it.

I think about you all more than you know.

So this year, I wanted to share the birthday a little.
For this weekend only, everything in my shop is 50% off. Every course, every guide.

The Children's Book Creator
Mastering Branding for Self-Publishers
The Children's Book Marketing Course
And all my written guides

Use code BIRTHDAY62 at checkout. The sale runs Thursday 5th March through Sunday 8th March only.

If something has been on your list for a while, now's a lovely time to go for it.

The Home Boss

I uploaded my first book to Amazon KDP in 2019.
Hit publish. Watched the dashboard. Waited for sales.
A few came in. I felt like I was doing something right.
Until I realised something that changed everything.
I had no idea who bought my book.
Not their name. Not their email. Nothing.
They weren't my customers. They were Amazon's customers who happened to buy something I made.
And that's when it hit me.
I was building my entire publishing business on rented land.
If Amazon changed their algorithm tomorrow, my books could disappear.
If they suspended my account, I'd lose everything.
No way to reach my readers. No way to tell them about my next book. No way to rebuild.
Because I didn't own the relationship. Amazon did.
Here's what I wish someone had told me in 2019:
Build your email list from day one.
Because every book you publish without an email list is a missed opportunity.
Every reader who loves your work but has no way to hear from you again is a connection lost.
Every launch you do without a warm audience means you're starting from zero.
The publishers who have steady income and aren't terrified of Amazon?
They have email lists.
Not huge ones. Just people who said: yes, I want to hear from you.
And when they launch a new book, they don't hope Amazon shows it to the right people.
They email their list. "Hey, I made something new."
And sales come in. Consistently. Predictably.
Because they own the relationship.
But here's what stops most publishers.
Building an email list feels complicated.
Mailchimp. ConvertKit. Forms. Landing pages. Tech overwhelm.
That's why I created the Substack Email List Challenge inside my Home Boss Publishing Academy.
It's simple. No complicated tools. Just me walking you through every step until it's done.
We set up your Substack together. We write your first email together. We get your first subscribers together.
Because I know what happens when you try to do it alone. You get stuck. You give up.
And six months later, you're still refreshing your KDP dashboard, hoping Amazon will be kind to you today.
Join the Academy with a 7-day free trial.
Come inside. Take the Substack Challenge. Set up your email list properly this time.
Then decide if you want to stay. It's £37/month for the first 50 founding members (then £47).
Cancel anytime during the trial. No pressure.
I just want to give you the chance to build something Amazon can't take away from you.
A real publishing business. Not a lottery ticket.
