Frustrating news again today, from the Strait of Hormuz, in the conflict in the Middle East.

Just when we all thought the trapped six cruise ships would be able to make their way past the blockade, the Straits have been closed again by Iran.

Only one of the six has so far successfully made it out. That is the Celestyal Discovery, the first one that had the plucky courage to make a run for it.

Four of the ships were just hours from escaping, when Iran closed it again. They are now frozen in their tracks. Presumably anchors down, waiting to see what happens next.

The 4 waiting are: Celestyal Journey, MSC Euribia and 2 Mein Schiff.

Agonising tension.

It's great to see that the little Celestyal Discovery has made it through the most dangerous part of the Strait of Hormuz, and continuing past Oman, possibly to make a first stop at Muscat.

This has now encouraged a couple of the other trapped cruise lines to make a 'dash' for it. Sister ship the Celestyal Journey is now underway, followed by one of the two German Mein Schiff ships. MSC Euribia is also making a bolt.

This was all prompted by Iran announcing today that for a limited time the Strait of Hormuz is open. It's anyone's guess how long that will remain the case, so cruise ships, and indeed any other vessels, are now taking the risk that this could be their one and only chance.

Well done to the Celestyal Discovery for being the first one to bravely give it a go. 'Nerve wracking' probably doesn't even begin to describe how all the crew must be feeling aboard.

Breaking News: We just spotted one of the six cruise ships that has been caught up in the crossfire of the war in the Gulf, is bravely making a run for it. It's the little Celestyal Discovery, one of the two ships of the Greek cruise line.

Together with 2 ships from Mein Schiff, the MSC Euribia, one more Celestyal ship, and the Saudi Aroya, they have all been unable to move the entire Gulf War. Just this morning it was apparently announced that the straight of Hormuz is open. Nobody is sure if this is true. Almost no shipping traffic has gone through yet, except this little Celestyal ship!

None of the other cruise ships in the region appears to be trying.

That is one brave Captain, and crew!

God speed little ship.

Since our latest Video came on the weekend, ' The Best Cruise Ships We Tried in 2025', a lot of you have been asking specifically about the luxury ships featured in our 2025 wrap-up. We featured two in that Luxury and Ultra Luxury bracket, Oceania and Crystal.
