During the 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg in the American Civil War, Confederate Sergeant Richard Rowland Kirkland of the 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry risked his life to comfort Union soldiers who lay wounded in front of Marye's Heights.

Despite his youth, Kirkland enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861, not long after war was declared, before his older brothers. He was first assigned to Company E, 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, but was later transferred to Company G of the same regiment, and was promoted to sergeant.

The Northern troops had charged across the fields in front of the Confederate lines, but they had been thrown back every time. The open field in front of the Confederate lines was littered with the bodies of dead and wounded Union troops.
The wounded who were still conscious cried out for water, but it would have been certain death for one of their comrades to try to cross the field. But their pitiful cries moved the Confederate Sergeant Kirkland.

He asked permission from General Kershaw to carry water to the wounded. The General tried to talk him out of the near-suicidal mission, but he reluctantly gave Kirkland permission.

Kirkland borrowed canteens from his friends and went over the stone wall. Union slugs struck around him as he rushed to the nearest wounded man. The firing stopped when the Union troops realized what he was doing.

Kirkland held each wounded man's head up as he put a canteen to the man's lips. Then he put the man's knapsack under his head and draped the man's coat over him because it was a cold day.

Then he went to another wounded man. When he ran out of water, he went back over the stone fence and the battle resumed. But he returned with more water and an unofficial truce fell over the field again. No one else had the courage to help him, but for 90 minutes he gave succor to the wounded Union troops.

Kirkland died less than a year later at the Battle of Chickamauga. But the tale of his bravery lived on and he become known as "The Angel of Marye's Heights." There is now a statue near the field that commemorates his acts of bravery and mercy.
