Alex Grigg // Animation for Anyone

With the much anticipated release of Silksong just announced I thought I might share a little story about my career (for those who haven't been following me the whole time). The co-creator of Hollow Knight and Silksong, Ari Gibson, was the one who taught me to animate in 2D.

My first job in the industry was on a short film called The Cat Piano. Voiced by Nick Cave and co-directed by Ari. I learned animation on paper but majored in 3D animation at university. After I graduated I moved to Japan where I started building a 3d animation reel and concept art portfolio. Ari and the team took a punt by hiring me as a 2D animator, for which I'm eternally grateful.

My classmate, Makoto Koji was the one who did the hard work of making the connection with the studio the film was being made at (The People's Republic of Animation) and vouched for me when they were looking to crew up for the film. Without Makoto making that effort and Ari taking the risk to hire me, my career would have been totally different.

Making The Cat Piano was really fun, but also crazy hard. Myself, 2 other animators and Ari all lived at Ari's mum's house. We'd pile into his old car and drive to work 6 days a week, 10 hours a day for months on end. We animated the whole film in Photoshop, which is what Ari still uses to make games as far as I know.
When the film made its international premiere at Annecy Animation Festival, I finally got to see it with a huge audience and a massive screen. It flicked a switch in my brain and changed how I thought about making things.

I'm so happy to see the success of Hollow Knight and the hype around Silksong. Ari and everyone involved work so incredibly hard to make stuff.
