Ask yourself “what is it about it this Mercury Dime that looks fake?”

The more answers you can come up with the better your skill set is at spotting these fakes.

“1968 Kennedy Half Fails Ping Test”

That was the title on Rick L’s post in the COIN Help U community forum.

coinauctionshelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25805

He had bought a roll of 40% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars from eBay and was testing his purchase.

He found a 1968 Kennedy that didn’t have a ping.

Instead it had a dull thud.

He also tested the weight, dimensions, and slid it down a magnet slide.

They all passed.

The ping was the only one not passing.

He then wrote his post in the forum to see if he could find some answers.

After further inspection he found a seam along the edge of the coin.

He pulled the top layer back exposing the inner core of the coin.

He then contacted CONECA and sent the coin in for inspection.

They confirmed his Silver Clad Kennedy as a real coin and it possibly was a production problem with the planchet or the outer layer.

Pretty cool.

I wonder if it could be certified as a mint error?
Not sure how that works.

Pocket Pinger: 100+ Counterfeits Caught and now potentially a Mint Error

Thanks to Rick L for sharing!

The Bullion Balance - coming later!?
It may be awhile.

I imported this foam from Sweden. Multiple different densities of a high end EVA foam.

I read online that EVA is used in some coin capsules and off brand coin slabs.

So I thought it was ok for precious metals but it may not be.

I met with the R&D department of a massive foam manufacturer in the USA last Thursday to discuss the project.

I asked about the new shoe smell when the foam first arrived from overseas and the engineer said that smell was peroxide.

I googled peroxide and it may cause a problem for Silver.

More noticeably for metals that aren’t pure like Sterling.

Yes, chemically cross-linked EVA foam is being used in coin slabs and coin capsules.

I don’t know who makes these decisions.

That said, EVA may be ok.
I’m just not trying to do that.

This same manufacturer gave me one other option of foam.

It’s physically cross linked, safe for food, and used in medical settings like surgery rooms.

Not surprisingly also seen in the coin industry.

Now I just have to figure out how to make a Bullion Balance with it.

Its going to be awhile, take a lot more to design and build, but it’s for the better.

I’m on it.
