The legend goes that the moment white smoke rises over the Vatican, something equally miraculous begins brewing in Seattle — the roster clicks, the defense hardens, and the path to the Super Bowl mysteriously opens.

• 1978 – Pope John Paul II elected: The legend begins — destiny is quietly set in motion, laying the spiritual groundwork for future Seahawks greatness.
• 2005 – Pope Benedict XVI elected: The Seahawks immediately surge and appear in Super Bowl XL (2006), proving the “papal playoff push” is real.
