'First-cousin marriages have economic advantages': UK's National Health Service's latest guidance
Massive public outrage has erupted after the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) suggested in its latest that there are benefits to first-cousin marriage despite known health risks, including genetic disease in offspring.
The article titled, "Should the UK government ban first-cousin marriage," said that first-cousin marriage is linked to “stronger extended family support systems and economic advantages”.
The article has since been removed, with UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting calling for an apology over the controversial material.
The Keir Starmer government has been accused of prioritising cultural sensitivities as in-family marriages are common among people of Pakistani heritage.
In a major push for regional connectivity, India has announced two cross-border rail links with Bhutan.
The 69-kilometre-long Kokrajhar-Gelephu will connect Assam’s Kokrajhar and Chirang districts with Bhutan’s Sarpang region, while the 20-kilometre-long long Banarhat-Samtse line will link West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district with Bhutan’s Samtse.
