What is the role of neutral density (ND) filters in landscape photography?

Neutral density (ND) filters, also known as gray density filters, neutral density filters, or simply gray filters, are designed to reduce the amount of light entering the camera. In landscape photography, ND filters play a crucial role in creating a good photo. To date, ND filters remain an indispensable filter in post-processing.

What are ND filters suitable for?

Many photographers want to capture the cotton-like flow of water, which requires a shutter speed of 1 second or longer to achieve. However, due to the intensity of external light, we cannot get a long enough shutter speed to achieve our photographic intent. In this case, by attaching an ND filter to reduce the amount of light entering the lens, we can slow down the shutter speed, and the waterfall will become thread-like, and the clouds in the sky will have dynamic effects, which is the effect that ND filters can achieve.

We all know that light pollution in urban areas is quite severe, and since the small aperture of the camera itself cannot effectively reduce the amount of light, the shutter speed will be limited. However, if we cannot use long exposure, the image will be overexposed, so at this time, an ND filter needs to be used in combination with a small aperture to capture beautiful car tracks.

Therefore, in addition to good light reduction effect, the coating of the ND filter is also very meticulous. MECORIGHT's MRC ND filter uses IR red light suppression film, a super-long light band suppression coating from 400NM to 100NM, a flat transmission curve from visible light to near-infrared light, and can achieve a completely color-neutral effect. In addition, it uses German Schott glass, which is waterproof, scratch-resistant, and oil-resistant, and can protect the lens when shooting outdoors.
