Trump and Zelensky Clash as US-Russia Diesel Deal Deepens Rift
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are locked in a public confrontation after Washington agreed to buy large quantities of Russian diesel, temporarily easing sanctions in an effort to bring down fuel prices ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump announced the arrangement on Friday after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Under the deal, Russia is set to release more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately onto the American and global markets, followed by 500,000 tonnes in November and another million tonnes after that, with the possibility of further supplies depending on the state of Russian refineries. The US Treasury issued a temporary licence suspending sanctions on Russian diesel exports until early April. Trump has described lower diesel costs for American farmers, ranchers and truckers as a top priority, noting prices have climbed sharply in recent months.
Zelenskyy reacted strongly, calling the agreement a gift to Putin and an investment in a war that should be ended rather than prolonged. He warned that the revenue would help Moscow fund further attacks and said any easing of pressure without reciprocal steps only emboldens Russia. Ukrainian officials have also said their negotiators were in Miami meeting Trump’s envoys at the time the deal was announced and felt they were being used as cover while the agreement was struck with Moscow.
On Saturday, Trump escalated the dispute, telling reporters it was time for Ukraine to get a new president. He said Zelenskyy could have made deals to end the war on multiple occasions but has not done so, and he blamed continued Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities for contributing to high global diesel prices. He warned that those strikes needed to stop. Zelenskyy’s team has pushed back, with Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stating that the Ukrainian leader has the support of his people and is doing his job.
The same day, Russian strikes hit residential areas in Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 20 people including three children. Zelenskyy described the attacks as Moscow’s response to the sanctions relief. European partners have largely backed Kyiv’s view that pressure on Russia should not be eased at this stage.
A US official has indicated that the diesel deal followed repeated American requests for Ukraine to halt attacks on Russian refineries, which Washington saw as directly affecting American consumers. Those requests were not followed, according to the official. The episode has widened the gap between the two leaders at a moment when talks aimed at ending the war were already under way, and it has raised questions about how the relationship will develop in the weeks ahead.

Deadliest Attack in a Decade: Houthis Strike Riyadh Airport, Killing 12 and Wounding Over 300
A missile strike attributed to Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels hit King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital of Riyadh on Saturday, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 300 in the deadliest attack on the kingdom in more than a decade. 
Saudi civil aviation authorities confirmed the toll on Sunday. The dead included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshis, and one person each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and Sudan. Some of the 309 wounded were in critical condition. Hospitals treated casualties brought in by ambulance and helicopter. 
The strike, which hit a passenger terminal complex used for domestic flights (Terminals 3 and 4), was the third attack on the same airport this week. Earlier strikes this week killed at least three people and damaged a Saudia commercial aircraft. Operations at the airport serving a city of roughly 8 million were suspended, with hundreds of flights cancelled or diverted. Multiple countries, including the US, UK, Spain, and Canada, warned their citizens against using the facility.
