The Supreme Court on December 16 issued notice in a plea challenging the legality of the Parliamentary Committee constituted under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, to inquire into impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma following the discovery of unaccounted cash at his official residence.

Appearing for Justice Varma, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi argued that the committee’s constitution was procedurally flawed, contending that when impeachment motions are given in both Houses of Parliament on the same day, the Act mandates a joint committee to be constituted only after admission in both Houses and mandatory consultation between the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman.

The challenge arises from the broader controversy surrounding the March 14 recovery of currency notes during a fire-fighting operation at Justice Varma’s residence, which led to an in-house judicial inquiry, his repatriation to the Allahabad High Court, and subsequent impeachment notices—now placing the statutory process itself under the Supreme Court’s scrutiny.

Russia has blocked access to the popular gaming platform Roblox, citing serious concerns over child safety and the spread of extremist content. The country’s media regulator, Roskomnadzor, said the platform hosts “inappropriate content” that could harm the moral and spiritual development of children, according to local reports.

Authorities flagged issues ranging from terrorism-related simulations and gambling scenarios to LGBT-related content, which is classified as extremist and banned under Russian law. The regulator also cited reports of sexual harassment of minors and the sharing of intimate images, calling Roblox’s user-generated gaming model difficult to regulate effectively.

Roblox, one of Russia’s most downloaded games in recent years, said it respects local laws and maintains robust safety measures to prevent harmful content. However, the platform has faced global scrutiny, including bans in countries like Turkey, legal action in the US, and criticism over child safety, prompting recent changes such as restricting chats between children and adult strangers.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has held that compliance with Section 65-B of the Indian Evidence Act, 1872—which mandates certification for electronic evidence—is not strictly applicable to proceedings before Family Courts. The Court observed that Family Courts, under Section 14 of the Family Courts Act, 1984, possess broad powers to receive any evidence that may assist them in effectively adjudicating matrimonial disputes.

A Division Bench of Justice Vishal Dhagat and Justice B.P. Sharma delivered the ruling while dismissing a first appeal challenging the Family Court’s decree of divorce on the ground of adultery. The decree had been based primarily on photographs that were allegedly secondary electronic evidence admitted without a certificate under Section 65-B.

The Supreme Court has ruled that when a candidate has studied the requisite subject as a principal component of their postgraduate curriculum, their candidature cannot be rejected merely because the degree title does not bear that subject’s name, holding that insisting solely on degree nomenclature amounts to elevating form over substance.

The Bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi delivered the decision while allowing an appeal filed by Laxmikant Sharma challenging the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s order, which had upheld the termination of his contractual services as Monitoring and Evaluation Consultant with the Water Support Organization, State Water Mission, Public Health & Engineering Department.

The Supreme Court has held that when a government employee nominates a parent for General Provident Fund (GPF) benefits, but the nomination form expressly states that it will become invalid upon the employee acquiring a family through marriage, such nomination automatically ceases to be valid after marriage—even if it is not formally cancelled. In such circumstances, the GPF amount must be distributed equally among all eligible family members.

The Bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh delivered the judgment while allowing an appeal filed by Smt. Bolla Malathi, widow of a deceased Defence Accounts Department employee, challenging the Bombay High Court’s decision that had awarded the entire GPF amount to the employee’s mother.

The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh at Srinagar has dismissed a petition challenging the orders of the trial and appellate courts, which had rejected an application for a Permanent Prohibitory Injunction filed by petitioners Ghulam Mohammad Reshi @ Gulla and another. In a judgment pronounced on December 5, 2025, the High Court affirmed the lower courts’ finding that the dispute primarily falls within the jurisdiction of authorities constituted under the Jammu and Kashmir Agrarian Reforms Act, thereby barring the jurisdiction of the civil court.

The petitioners had filed a suit seeking a Permanent Prohibitory Injunction, claiming they were in physical cultivating possession of land measuring 5 kanals and 4 marlas in Village Brah, Tehsil Shangus, District Anantnag, and that mutation under Section 4 of the Act stood attested in their favour. They contended that their long possession, spanning over 50 years, had matured into title.

In a significant development amid nationwide disruption caused by large-scale flight cancellations by IndiGo Airlines, the Supreme Court of India, in a Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, declined to urgently list a petition seeking immediate judicial intervention in what was described as an unprecedented aviation crisis affecting air passengers across the country.

The Bench observed that although “lakhs of people are stranded at airports… people having urgent work, people in need of urgent health issues,” the Central Government and relevant aviation authorities have already taken cognisance of the situation and initiated remedial measures. The Court stated that at present “there is no urgency right now,” while keeping open the possibility of intervention should the situation worsen.

A Kerala court on Monday delivered a landmark verdict in the 2017 actress abduction and sexual assault case, acquitting Malayalam actor Dileep while convicting prime accused Pulsar Suni (Sunil NS) and five others. The court held that Dileep and three co-accused were not criminally liable for conspiracy or involvement in the assault.

The court, however, found Suni, Martin Antony, Manikandan B, Vijeesh VP, Salim H (Vadival Salim), and Pradeep guilty of gang rape, criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, outraging modesty, attempted disrobing, and offences under Sections 66E and 67A of the IT Act for recording and transmitting explicit videos of the survivor. Sentencing is scheduled for December 12.

The trial stemmed from the survivor actress’s abduction and assault in a moving vehicle on February 17, 2017, an incident that shook the Malayalam film industry. The court’s verdict marks a crucial turning point in the eight-year-long case monitored closely by the public, judiciary, and film fraternity. Ernakulam Principal District & Sessions Judge Honey M. Varghese pronounced the much-awaited judgment.
