Okay, enough is enough 😭📜 and I’m clearing up NILÜFER HATUN was BÎLÛN/BEYLUN HATUN and NOT a concubine, for God’s sake. Let’s actually look at the historical sources instead of taking every storyline from a historical drama as if it came directly from a 14th-century archive. The strongest clue that Bîlûn/Beylun was Nilüfer Hatun comes from the famous traveller Ibn Battûta. When Ibn Battûta visited İznik around 1332–1333, he recorded meeting Orhan Bey’s wife and gave her name as “Bîlûn”, with the name also appearing in manuscript forms such as Biliven/Niliven. And THIS is the important part: the scholarly TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi explains that Niliven/Biliven is very similar to Nilüfer, and that the difference can be explained by an “istinsah hatası”, meaning a copying/transcription error. So when people say “Beylun and Nilüfer are completely different women,” the historical text itself gives us a reason to question that assumption. Ibn Battûta was not talking about some random woman either — he specifically describes her as Orhan Bey’s hanım, and calls her “sâliha ve fâzıla,” meaning a pious and virtuous woman. TDV goes even further and says that there is essentially no reason to doubt that the woman Ibn Battûta met was Nilüfer Hatun. That is a pretty important piece of evidence. 📜

And now the “Nilüfer was just a concubine” claim. Please 😭. The same TDV article actually says that identifying her as a cariye merely from her name is a “zayıf ihtimal” — a weak possibility. The early Ottoman ruling family did not operate exactly like the later Ottoman palace system that people usually imagine when they hear the word “harem.” Early Ottoman marriages could also have political and dynastic purposes. So there is absolutely no solid historical basis for confidently saying, “Nilüfer was definitely a concubine.” The scholarly source actually treats that idea as weak. More importantly, the sources consistently refer to her as Orhan Bey’s hanımı. And the word “hatun” itself was a title used for women belonging to ruling families and for rulers’ wives; TDV specifically lists Nilüfer Hatun as Orhan Bey’s wife. (TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi⁠)

Now, was she Orhan’s first wife? Here we need to be historically honest. We cannot prove from surviving sources that Nilüfer was literally his first wife in chronological order. There are other women associated with Orhan, including Asporça Hatun. What we CAN establish is that Nilüfer was an important and recognised hanım of Orhan, and that the evidence for her being Bîlûn is strong. So I would NOT say “the sources prove she was definitely his first wife” because they don’t give us a neat marriage certificate saying FIRST WIFE: NILÜFER 😭📜. What we can say is that later internet arguments trying to reduce her to “just a concubine” are not supported by the strongest scholarly discussion.

And then we have Elçim Hatun. This is where we need to separate television from history. The Elçim Hatun presented in Kuruluş Osman as Orhan’s wife is a dramatised character/storyline, and her role should not be treated as proof that she historically came before Nilüfer or had a higher status than her. The surviving historical evidence does not establish the television version of Elçim’s marriage to Orhan as a documented historical fact. So when the series places Elçim into the story and creates a particular relationship between her and Nilüfer, that is screenwriting, not a newly discovered Ottoman document. 😭🎬

Now let’s talk about Asporça Hatun, because people sometimes use her existence to argue that Nilüfer somehow wasn’t important. Asporça was indeed another wife of Orhan, and historical sources associate her with Byzantine Emperor Andronikos III. But there is no reliable historical “wife ranking” saying Asporça = superior, Nilüfer = inferior. That is simply not how the evidence works. In fact, even when scholars discuss who Ibn Battûta’s Bîlûn might have been, Asporça is presented as an alternative identification, while the similarity between Niliven/Biliven and Nilüfer is one of the reasons Emecen supports identifying the woman as Nilüfer. So Asporça being important does NOT automatically make her “more superior” than Nilüfer. Different women can have different historical positions without there being an Ottoman version of a leaderboard 😭.

And now her children, because this is where the historical record becomes especially important. Nilüfer was unquestionably the mother of Sultan Murad I. That is one of the strongest facts about her. She is not merely remembered because she was associated with Orhan; she became the mother of the ruler who succeeded Orhan. However, there is an important correction: older Ottoman chroniclers, particularly Âşıkpaşazâde, also attributed Süleyman Paşa to Nilüfer. Modern scholarship rejects this attribution. TDV explains that Süleyman’s mother was Efendi/Efendize Hatun, while Nilüfer was Murad’s mother. The chronology makes this particularly significant: Murad is generally dated to 1326–1327, whereas the earlier records concerning Süleyman point to a different maternal identification. So if someone says “Nilüfer was the mother of both Süleyman and Murad” as an unquestionable fact, that is actually relying on an older tradition that modern scholarship has challenged. And Nilüfer’s importance didn’t end with being Murad’s mother. In 1388, Sultan Murad I had the Nilüfer Hatun İmareti in İznik built in his mother’s name. The surviving inscription identifies it as having been commissioned by Murad for his mother, Nilüfer Hatun. That is a major piece of evidence for how she was remembered within the dynasty.
