Modi’s 10 Commandments: Sermonizing Citizens While the Government Fails at Governance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s list is classic BJP-style “behavioral nudge” politics — shifting the burden of national failure onto ordinary citizens’ daily habits while the regime trumpets grand slogans like Atmanirbhar Bharat. It’s less a serious economic roadmap and more a moralistic lecture that reeks of evasion, impracticality, and selective blindness.

Core Problems with the List:
Stop buying gold & silver

This is cultural tone-deafness at its peak. In India, gold is not “unnecessary bling” — it is security, inheritance, and social obligation, especially for women in an uncertain economy. Blaming housewives and families for forex drain ignores successive governments’ (including this one) inability to build enough productive assets or curb black money that actually flees abroad. Modi’s own term has seen massive gold imports alongside rising NPAs and crony capitalism.
Reduce petrol & diesel + Use EVs + Work from home

Noble on paper. Reality: India’s public transport is collapsing in many cities, charging infrastructure is pathetic outside metro bubbles, and electricity generation still relies heavily on coal. “Work from home” is an elite Delhi-Mumbai tech fantasy — irrelevant for farmers, factory workers, street vendors, and truck drivers who form the real economy. This is performative environmentalism that punishes the middle class with higher fuel taxes while subsidizing select EV makers (many with Chinese linkages).
Reduce foreign travel

The hypocrisy meter explodes here. While Modi asks citizens to skip vacations abroad, the Prime Minister and his ministerial entourage have logged record foreign trips, summits, and diaspora events with massive delegations and costs. One rule for the aam aadmi, another for VVIPs with their red beacons and SPG cover.

Reduce use of cooking oil + Stop chemical fertilizers

This is dangerous populism. India’s edible oil import dependence is a structural failure of agricultural policy spanning decades, worsened by neglect of oilseed missions. Suddenly asking people to “use less” is like admitting policy bankruptcy.
On fertilizers: Pushing “zero chemical” without massive investment in organic alternatives, bio-inputs, and yield protection risks repeating Sri Lanka’s disastrous overnight ban. Farmers already protesting MSP and input costs will face lower output and income — all while food inflation ravages the poor. Soil health matters; starving stomachs matter more.

Buy local + Solar + Water conservation
“Vocal for Local” has become a protectionist slogan that often shields inefficiency and substandard products. Genuine competitiveness requires rule-based reforms, not emotional boycotts. Solar push is one area with some progress, yet implementation is marred by land scams, discom losses, and heavy Chinese imports of panels and components. Water conservation lectures sound hollow when governments fail to fix canal networks, promote drip irrigation at scale, or check groundwater mafia.
Reduce family expenses

The ultimate insult. After years of “India shining” claims, high GDP numbers, and stock market highs, the Prime Minister is telling citizens to practice thrift because the household budget is strained. This comes from a government that runs massive fiscal deficits, funds grandiose projects and political advertising, while real wage growth stagnates for large sections, unemployment worries persist (especially youth), and private investment response remains patchy.

The Deeper Political Game
This list perfectly captures Modi-era governance pattern: Maximum rhetoric, minimum accountability. Instead of fixing:
Low manufacturing share in GDP,
Agricultural productivity crisis,
Regulatory cholesterol and inspector raj,
Skill gaps and education quality,

Crony favoritism in key sectors...
...the leadership lectures citizens on personal austerity and “small sacrifices.” It’s jan bhagidari (people’s participation) as a cover for state failure. When imports are high, blame the citizen. When forex is under pressure, target weddings and travel. When pollution rises, tell people to buy expensive EVs without fixing coal plants or urban planning.

Atmanirbhar Bharat was sold as self-reliance through production. It has often translated into “self-denial by consumption.” Citizens are asked to tighten belts so the government can continue with high-decibel nationalism, centralization, and photo-ops. Genuine sustainability and self-reliance need serious structural reforms — land, labor, agriculture, trade, and ease of doing business — not ten WhatsApp forwards guilt-tripping the middle class and homemakers.

Strong words? Yes. Because pretending this list represents visionary leadership is the real disservice to national development. India needs less moralizing sermons and more competent execution.
