Drum Mechanics

🧠🥁 Want more speed on the drums? Here’s the truth:
Speed isn’t built by only practicing slow — it’s built by practicing smart.

1️⃣ Slow practice builds precision.
You need to use the same techniques at slow tempos that you’ll use fast. That’s how you get clean motor transfer and efficient motion.

2️⃣ Fast practice builds the engine.
To actually develop fast-twitch response and higher-speed coordination, you must practice at fast tempos too — even if it’s messy at first.

3️⃣ Rest = adaptation.
Your nervous system and muscles only upgrade when you rest. No recovery = no speed gains.

🏎️💨 Slow for control. Fast for adaptation. Rest for growth. Combine all three and your speed takes off.

DW Double Bass Kit with Custom Gibraltar Stealth Rack 👇
• The front tube is a 46” curved bar with a 5” extension, giving me the clearance I need without requiring a center support.
• The side bars are low-profile 36” tubes, mounted as close to the ground as possible.
• I shortened the tom arms by about 2” so I could get the rack toms lower while still allowing for plenty of hardware to hang.
• The legless hi-hat stand is a dream for positioning—huge win for ergonomics.
• I went with Gibraltar because they offer tons of options to customize your setup exactly how you want it.

Truth is, this is way more drum set than I need—but it’s super fun to play!

Why Sitting in the Center of Your Drum Throne Matters

I recently did a simple experiment that really highlights why your seating position can make a huge difference when you play.

I sat on the edge of my throne and shifted my center of mass forward — basically leaning toward the kit. I placed a foot on each scale to measure the resistance at the pedals… and each foot was pressing 33 pounds into the floor!

Then, I sat properly with my center of mass balanced in the middle of the throne. Same test. The weight through each foot dropped to about 17 pounds.

That’s almost half the resistance just by adjusting how I sat.

Why does this matter?
When you’re carrying extra load through your legs just to stay upright, every stroke at the pedals costs more energy. You get tired faster. Your touch becomes heavier. Your endurance, speed, and control all take a hit.

Sitting centered = less resistance = more efficient, longer-lasting drumming.

Tiny details like throne position aren’t just comfort things — they change the way your body moves, feels, and performs behind the kit.

If you’re feeling heavy or sluggish at the pedals, check your seating. Your body will thank you.

Drum Mechanics

Slowing down your double bass practice won’t guarantee progress—especially if you’re using the wrong strategy at the hip. Many drummers unknowingly reinforce poor mechanics by overusing deep hip flexion instead of coordinating movement through the full kinetic chain.

From a neuroscience perspective, repetition—even at slow speeds—builds myelination. That means your nervous system is literally insulating those patterns, good or bad. So if the movement is inefficient, you’re hardwiring the wrong habit.

Practise slow with the right intent and mechanics, and you’re not just avoiding injury—you’re programming your body to move faster, cleaner, and more economically later.
