ALBUM REVIEW #21
This album sprang from the death of Saba’s cousin Walter. The story of his death is foreshadowed before one of the final tracks when he goes in-depth on it and finally accepts it. But this point of the album is meant to be the stage of denial and Walter's death is merely the backdrop for the themes.
The opening BUSY/SIRENS is a strong start setting the stage for the rest of the album and one of Saba’s best verses at the end. The production is a bit shallow but the performances are compelling enough to mostly distract from that and it grew on me. Especially since the vibe reflects what Saba is expressing in his rapping.
By far Saba’s strong suit here is the vulnerability he brings to the table, Saba closely expresses himself on this album and that's why it's so good. Most of this album is fulfilling in that regard. I think Saba is a better songwriter than he is a rapper, and this album is proof of this to me.
The album is also structured in denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Denial is BUSY/SIRENS, anger is LIFE, bargaining is SMILE, depression is PROM, and KING & HEAVEN ALL AROUND ME are acceptance. The album listening experience is phenomenal because of that, as standalone songs these hold up well too. Each song feels like a look into a different feeling because of that there’s really a song for any vibe, any emotion, it's really a diverse album but the album is structured in a way that the listening experience doesn’t take a sacrifice.
The climax of this structure is PROM/KING and HEAVEN ALL AROUND ME, not only is this the climax but it's some of, if not Saba’s best work. PROM/KING is a showcase of Saba’s lyrical ability and his storytelling. PROM is just 3:45 of pure storytelling and nothing else. The context to Walter's death is told here, but KING is the best part of this two parter song. Saba continues his storytelling and raps incredibly well on this song. The way the beat slightly evolves as he tells the story is just. By the end of the song Saba leaves the story to you to assume what happened but obviously based on context clues his cousin Walter died and this directly leads into HEAVEN ALL AROUND ME which is the true acceptance.
HEAVEN ALL AROUND ME makes me cry white tears it's so peak I can’t describe how good this song is. Every lyric is just layers upon layers, every drum is a heartbeat, every word spoken is one word that speaks a thousand… Saba masterfully tells this story. The way he shifts into the perspective of his cousin is just so amazing the lyrics are even better. The way he describes the emptiness and realization, but the beauty there is in too it is so emotional and beautiful. When he says Yellin’ at my mother like, I know you hear me. Get a little closer, repeat, bus driver pass me up don’t see me as his opening words I damn near ascended full glaze full homo.
Overall I’m feeling a strong 9-10/10 on this thing

Might take a break because it feels like there's new drama every other day. I see why so many people retired.
I haven't fully decided though.
It's been a low point in my life but this shit helped me but there had to be more drama.
I understand the reason this started but I just can't with this anymore.

Album review #20
After IGOR you wouldn't expect Tyler to come back with an album as great as this one is. By no means is this IGOR, but it is still a great project.
IGOR strived in being unique, but this album strives in being a bit of a back to basics project with it being a more traditional rap album, which is both its strong suit and its problem. Tyler just isn't as good at rapping as he is at producing or constructing a concept. Considering the fact Tyler isn't the best at rapping, he does still have a lot of engaging performances here. The production does still carry, but he has a lot of memorable one-liners and some of his most lyrical verses on songs like MASSA.
Though CORSO isn't the first track, it is the opener to me as it presents themes that make up the album like the bravado or the rich luxurious aesthetic/production and the relationship Tyler was in.
The third wheel story really isn't prevalent. For whatever reason Tyler must've decided not to prioritize storytelling on this album. The two tracks that do focus on it are phenomenal though. The highlight of the album is SWEET / I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE. The production is heavenly for both beats and Tyler's singing, rapping, and storytelling is great. For a somber story, the vibes are immaculate. If it wasn't for RUN IT UP Tyler would've gone on an insane 4 song run with HOT WIND BLOWS, MASSA, MANIFESTO, and this song.
Tyler reflecting on his early music on MASSA and MANIFESTO is something I really remember fondly on this album. MASSA is some of the best storytelling of Tyler's career. The “I don't come from money, they deny it since I don't mirror the stereotypical products of my environment” line really stuck with me, I always remember it whenever someone mentions this song or the album. MANIFESTO is also really memorable, definitely not as good as MASSA objectively speaking but I prefer it for its peak beat but most of all the immaculate Domo Genesis feature.
Overall I feel like this album does what it's trying to do very well. It sounds like a perfect cross between his rapping and his melodic production and it has some of Tyler's highest highs. Really grew on me. I'm feeling a strong 8/10 on this thing.
