Suffering from sleep anxiety is far from ideal. It can be stressful. Then the stress keeps us awake. Then we don’t sleep properly, then we’re tired the next day, which leads to more stress. And so the cycle continues.
“When over-stressed, we become sympathetic dominant, which is the state of fight or flight, releasing stress hormones like cortisol and our sleep tends to suffer,” says Leigh Brandon.
But it’s not just the less-than-ideal mental states brought on by a lack of sleep that are detrimental to our wellbeing and functionality. The physical drawbacks are palpable too.
Leigh adds: “When we’re stressed, the release of stress hormones prevents the release of growth hormones and therefore recovery is adversely affected. Our ability to recover and repair is totally reliant on getting adequate sleep.”
