Leadership advice is everywhere—Instagram quotes, LinkedIn posts, TED Talks. A common idea is: “When you are called to lead, you are called to serve.” It sounds noble, but what if that mindset actually limits your effectiveness?

I recently saw a post that said:
“When you are called to lead, you are called to serve. You become the servant because leadership is all about being of service to others.”

I replied:
“The sentiment is correct, but being a leader does not automatically make you a servant.”

Someone quickly fired back:
“Yes it does. And if you’re battling to comprehend this, then perhaps you haven’t understood the mandate of true leadership?”

I didn’t take the bait. Leadership goes beyond servitude—it’s about responsibility, vision, and making tough decisions. This mindset can hold leaders back.

Believing “leadership equals servitude” sounds virtuous but is misleading. Leaders who think their only role is to serve risk:
• Losing the bigger picture. Leadership means setting direction.
• Avoiding hard decisions. Leadership requires unpopular choices.
• Burnout. Serving without boundaries drains energy and weakens effectiveness.

Strong leadership balances service and strategy. Empower your team but lead decisively.

What does great leadership look like?
1. Set the vision. Provide clarity.
2. Create space for growth. Empower without micromanaging.
3. Make tough calls. The right choice isn’t always popular.
4. Set boundaries. Serving doesn’t mean sacrificing your well-being.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR):
Since its 2019 Champions League debut, VAR has helped referees make critical decisions. At UEFA EURO 2024, matches featured dedicated VAR teams working from the Football Technologies Hub in Leipzig. Focused on goals, penalties, red cards, and mistaken identity, VAR only steps in for clear and obvious errors, preserving the game’s flow.

Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT):
Offside calls became faster and more accurate with SAOT, launched at EURO 2024. Using ten stadium cameras tracking 29 body points per player, combined with data from the connected ball, it delivers precise, real-time decisions.

Connected Ball Technology:
The official match ball, Fussballliebe, contains sensors that transmit real-time data to match officials. This tech aids in determining exact ball contact moments, offside decisions, and subtle touches, including handballs. It also incorporates eco-friendly materials like recycled polyester and sugar cane.

Goal-Line Technology (GLT):
Since 2016, GLT has used seven cameras per goal to instantly notify referees when the entire ball crosses the line, eliminating goal-related controversies.

Wearable Technology:
Players are now using wearables to track health and performance. At EURO 2024, England’s squad used smart rings to monitor sleep, highlighting the growing focus on player recovery and well-being.

One of the biggest game-changers has been the evolution of hockey sticks. Once made of solid wood, they’re now crafted from ultra-lightweight carbon fiber, allowing for blistering shot speeds and pinpoint accuracy. Players can fine-tune their sticks with different flex levels, optimizing power and control.

Skates have undergone a similar transformation. Traditional leather boots have been replaced with thermoformable materials that mold perfectly to a player’s foot, improving comfort and agility. High-performance steel blades now feature advanced coatings that enhance durability and edge retention, helping players move with precision.

Fox Sports led the charge with advanced augmented reality (AR) graphics, integrating LiDAR technology to enhance on-screen visuals. By scanning the stadium pre-game, LiDAR created detailed 3D models, ensuring AR elements remained stable, even with camera movement. 

The broadcast featured over 140 cameras, including a high SkyCam equipped with Sony’s P50A, capturing 4K footage at 240 frames per second. This setup provided dynamic, high-resolution shots, enriching the replay experience. 

To manage the complex production, Fox Sports introduced a two-story, 10,000-square-foot technical facility. This hub housed editing suites, video and audio control rooms, and network engineering teams, streamlining operations and ensuring seamless content delivery. 

In collaboration with Sportradar, Fox Sports enhanced its graphics package with real-time statistical data and historical context. The Radar360 analytics platform enabled the creation of pre-produced graphics, enriching the storytelling aspect of the broadcast. 

For viewers without traditional cable, Fox-owned streaming platform Tubi offered free, live streaming of Super Bowl LIX in 4K. This move expanded accessibility, allowing a broader audience to experience the game without subscription barriers. 

The NFL’s Technology Operations team played a crucial role in coordinating wireless communications and RF testing. Conducting comprehensive tests, including a full-scale rehearsal three days before kickoff, the team ensured all devices operated seamlessly amidst the high-demand environment of over 73,000 fans. 

These technological advancements and meticulous planning culminated in a record-breaking viewership of 127.7 million, solidifying Super Bowl LIX as the most-watched game in history.
