When you're ashamed to confess your sins, remember Saint Margarida Alacoque: Jesus has an awful memory


I saw a post about this, and it reminded me of a beautiful story. I decided to share it because I'm sure it may help many of us.

When Jesus began appearing to Saint Margarida/ Margaret Alacoque, she told her confessor about the visions.

He didn't believe her. Yet she kept telling him that Jesus was visiting her. Eventually, the priest decided to test her. He told her to ask Jesus what the last mortal sin was that he, the priest, had confessed. If she came back with the correct answer, he would know she was telling the truth.

The next day she returned and said: "Our Lord told me He doesn't remember your last confessed sin anymore." That was when the priest knew she was telling the truth.

First, because once our sins are forgiven, we are made clean, and God no longer holds those sins against us. Second, because he knew from his own experience as a confessor: after hearing so many confessions, it was impossible for him to remember any particular person's sins. Perhaps that, too, is a reflection of how God wants it to be.

So when you're ashamed to go to confession, remember Saint Margarida Alacoque: Jesus has an awful memory.
