These are real-life accounts from the stories of Sarika Singh & Tanya Mittal, respectively, who faced discrimination in their initial years as women with cleft, but that didn’t deter them a bit from creating their identity as professional actors and models.
Brut India recently hosted a roundtable where they invited these brave women alongside Tonic Worldwide and Smile Train, who together are championing a campaign to drive representation and inclusivity for people with a cleft. The latest milestone under their campaign has been the release of the first cleft-inclusive image library on Shutterstock, which was non-existent so far and posed a serious roadblock in cleft representation.
While Mamta Carroll aims to achieve the same level of awareness for cleft like polio and HIV through Smile Train’s campaigns, Anjali Malthankar believes that brands can play a big role in normalizing representation by taking the lead and the rest will follow. She hopes to see a child with a cleft in a happy family ad and perhaps a Barbie doll with a cleft, someday.
