37 and Rising Like Fresh Bread 🍞🌿
Today I turn 37—and honestly, there’s no place I’d rather be than right here in my cozy little kitchen, apron on, with the scent of fresh-baked bread filling the air and ingredients from our own backyard ready to nourish our family.
This birthday didn’t call for anything fancy. Just love, simplicity, and homemade goodness.
I spent the morning baking up our favorite white rosemary bread, straight from the garden to the oven. The rosemary was picked fresh this morning, tucked into soft white dough, and now it’s golden and fragrant. It’s the kind of bread that makes you slow down, breathe in deeply, and feel connected to your home.
We pulled together dinner using all the beautiful things growing in the garden right now:
– Cherry tomatoes, basil, and green onions went into a simple garden pasta
– Kale was tossed with homemade dressing and roasted chickpeas for a hearty summer salad
– Cucumber, onion & basil salad for a refreshing side
– And those day-old buns? Reimagined into buttery herb garlic toast (nothing goes to waste around here)
It wasn’t just a birthday dinner—it was a celebration of growth.
Thank you to everyone who’s followed this journey, shared a recipe, watched a garden tour, or supported the Hometown Homestead dream. I’m not just baking bread—I’m baking memories.
Here’s to another year of growing what we can, making it stretch, and sharing the warmth of homemade moments. 💛

Green pepper check-in! 💚
They’re growing beautifully and bringing so much life to the garden right now. Can’t wait to use these in summer meals—maybe stuffed, grilled, or tossed fresh in a salad. Nothing like watching your food grow right outside your door.

Thrifted treasures and intentional living.
This week, I found this beautiful floral skirt while thrifting with my mom, and it reminded me why we love this lifestyle so much. For our family, homesteading isn’t just about growing our own food—it’s about living sustainably, being resourceful, and making the most of what we already have. Thrifting plays a big role in that journey.
Every piece we bring home tells a story, saves something from the landfill, and supports our goal of living more simply and intentionally.
Here are 5 thrifting tips for anyone wanting to start or deepen their sustainable lifestyle:
1. Check your local thrift shops weekly – Inventory changes fast, and frequent visits mean better chances of scoring great finds.
2. Follow them on social media – Many shops post sales, new arrivals, or discount days online.
3. Ask about restock days – Timing your visits right can help you find the freshest items before they’re gone.
4. Have a list (but stay open-minded) – Know what you’re looking for, but leave room for creativity—you might find something even better.
5. Get to know the staff – Building a friendly relationship can lead to tips, early notifications, and even hidden gems.
Homesteading is about more than just gardening—it’s about a mindset of making the most with what we have and finding joy in the simple things. And sometimes, that joy looks like a thrifted skirt, a walk with your mom, and a little more sunshine in your day.

Did you know!?
Option 1: Onion Powder Using a Dehydrator
You’ll need:
• Onion scraps (peels removed), or whole onions going soft
• Knife or food processor
• Dehydrator
Instructions:
1. Prep the onions: Peel if needed, then chop the onions or scraps into thin, uniform slices or small pieces.
2. Spread on trays: Place the pieces in a single layer on your dehydrator trays. Do not overlap.
3. Set the dehydrator:
• Temperature: 125°F to 135°F (52°C to 57°C)
• Time: 6 to 12 hours (check around 6 hours; they should snap dry and brittle)
4. Cool: Let the pieces cool completely before blending.
5. Grind into powder: Use a blender, coffee grinder, or mortar and pestle to grind the dried pieces into a fine powder.
6. Store: Keep in an airtight jar in a cool, dark place. Label with the date.

Option 2: Onion Powder Using the Oven
You’ll need:
• Onion scraps or soft onions
• Knife or food processor
• Baking sheet and parchment paper
Instructions:
1. Prep the onions: Peel and chop into thin slices or small pieces.
2. Preheat your oven: Set to the lowest possible temperature, ideally 150°F to 170°F (65°C to 75°C). If your oven doesn’t go that low, set it to the lowest temp and prop the door open slightly with a wooden spoon for air flow.
3. Spread on tray: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the onions in a single layer.
4. Bake (dehydrate):
• Time: 4 to 6 hours (flip halfway through)
• Check for dryness—pieces should be completely brittle.
5. Cool and grind: Let them cool, then grind into a powder using a blender or coffee grinder.
6. Store: Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
