I'm saddened to share the passing of Michael Byrne, who brought the elderly Gellert Grindelwald to life in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. He was 82. 🕯️
Byrne passed away on June 20. No cause of death has been disclosed.
In the 2010 film he portrayed an aged Grindelwald — the powerful dark wizard who had once been defeated in a legendary duel with Dumbledore, and who later defied Voldemort himself in his final moments. It was a brief but memorable appearance that stayed with fans. Beyond the Wizarding World, Byrne was one of Britain's most prolific character actors with over 160 screen credits spanning seven decades. He played the villainous Colonel Vogel opposite Harrison Ford and Sean Connery in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, fought alongside Mel Gibson in Braveheart, appeared in Gangs of New York, Tomorrow Never Dies, and spent two years on Coronation Street as Ted Page. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and began his career on the London stage in the 1960s alongside Maggie Smith.
He is survived by his ex-wife, his daughters Tara and Bryony, and his grandchildren Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine.
