Scarlet Deer Inn is finally out today! If you enjoy games with a medieval or Slavic atmosphere, I highly recommend checking it out. I really enjoyed the demo, and it ended on a cliffhanger that left me wanting to know what happened next. I've genuinely been looking forward to this game for years.

I know Warhorse became the center of attention today with the announcement of more Kingdom Come and Middle-earth projects, but another small Czech studio, Amanita Design, released their new game Phonopolis today, so check it out if it sounds interesting to you. I made a video about their older game Pilgrims years ago, and I think this deserves attention too.

Folk Walk

Long time no see. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’ve finally released a new video.

As for why I’ve been gone for so long…about half a year ago, I announced that starting this year, Folk Walk would focus purely on folklore. Any videos about The Witcher, the Middle Ages, or Kingdom Come: Deliverance would move to a different channel. I also wanted to start making videos about the process of worldbuilding my own Slavic fantasy.

But as the new year got closer, I realized something: everything I had created for this world existed only in my head. How could I show people what it’s about if I didn’t even have any illustrations?

On top of that, I’ve always wanted my videos to feel atmospheric, which means filming in a fitting environment, ideally in costume. The problem is…I still don’t have a proper folklore costume, and I don’t have access to a location like an open-air museum that would match the 18th-century setting I’m aiming for.

For a long time, I felt stuck and didn’t really know how to move forward.

Eventually, I realized I just have to work with what I have. So for this video, I just used illustrations and images from books, and I wore old version of the costum (even though it leans more toward a medieval look).

Going forward, I’d like to start creating my own illustrations, and hopefully design a new costume and have it made. Something that better fits the folklore aesthetic and the 18th-century countryside setting.

Because of that, I’m thinking that until I have the new costume ready and become more involved in the folklore community (so I can start making those kinds of videos more regularly) I’ll probably still occasionally make videos about The Witcher.

I don’t want to do videos about KCD or the Middle Ages on this channel anymore (that wasn’t the best decision in hindsight), but before I fully shift into pure folklore content, I don't mind mixing in an occasional Witcher video rather than doing a hard cut. Gradual transition will probably be better anyway.

Here are some of the books I’ve bought recently as inspiration for my Slavic fantasy world. Since it’s mainly inspired by the 18th-century countryside, the books are mostly about traditional folk costumes, architecture, customs and traditions, fairy tales, folklore creatures, and so on. I have even more of them, but these are the newest ones.

I hate comments like this. Every time you dare to utter the words "The Witcher" and "Slavic" in the same sentence, people like this appear.

They’re the reason I started creating my own Slavic fantasy world. Several years ago, I just ran out of patience and since I didn’t want to keep arguing with idiots, I told myself: "Alright, fine. Keep The Witcher then. I’ll make my own fantasy — one that’s even more Slavic, with rustic Slavic architecture, countryside setting, traditional folk costumes, customs, and so on."
And if anyone ever dares to tell me that I just copied The Witcher, I can say: "Wait, wait…I thought The Witcher ISN’T supposed to be Slavic."

Anyway, as it happens, I’m currently working on a video where I plan to introduce my Slavic fantasy world — so I thought I’d take this opportunity to make a post about it and explain one of the motivations behind why I started creating my own Slavic fantasy in the first place.
