Lehanna: Art of Crochet

Dear ones,

I would like to tell you about wet-heat treatment (WHT) for crochet items.
How should it be done correctly? From which side should you steam? And what is better—steam or washing?

Let’s go over the basic rules of WHT to ensure your projects always look flawless! 🧶✨

1. Washing

🔸 Use cool water—the temperature for washing and rinsing should be the same.
🔸 What to wash with? I prefer fabric conditioner or even hair conditioner (but never laundry detergent!).
For wool—do not rub it with soap! Instead, dissolve it in water and wash in this solution.
🔸 How to wring out? Do not twist! Wrap the item in a towel and gently press. You can even walk over the towel a bit to remove excess moisture.

2. Drying

🔸 Lay the item horizontally on a dry towel.
🔸 Turn it over as it dries for even drying.
🔸 Shaping the item:
— Want it a bit wider? Gently stretch it sideways.
— Need to lengthen it? You can hang it, but be careful! The fabric might stretch more than needed.

3. Steaming

🔸 Only from the wrong side!
🔸 Do not iron! Direct contact with an iron changes the properties of the yarn.
When a hot soleplate presses on stitches, they flatten, the pattern texture disappears, and the fabric loses its shape.
Acrylic is particularly sensitive to heat—it loses elasticity and durability.
🔸 How to do it properly? Hold the iron or steamer at a distance without touching the fabric.
🔸 After steaming, let the item dry again in a horizontal position.

4. What to avoid?

🚫 Drying on a radiator (only next to it, not on it).
🚫 Drying under direct sunlight—this over-dries the yarn and may affect the color.

How do I do it? 🤗

I wash my crochet items right away only in two cases:
1️⃣ If the item is light-colored.
2️⃣ If I need the yarn to fully bloom.

In all other cases, I just steam the item and wear it until the first wash. 🤗
Some might not approve of this method… 😏
