PETITION - Save the Cardiff University School of Music from closure
This feels like a strange post to make on here, but as music is so important to me I'd assume it's the same for my followers. The university I attend is threatening to discontinue all of its music courses, with the 2025/26 intake of students being the last. I'm asking as many of you as possible to sign the petition linked at the bottom of this post, to stop the closure of the school and stand up for the much neglected arts.
I'm currently in my third year at Cardiff's School of Music, I'm writing my dissertation and I'll (hopefully) graduate in July, but this amazing opportunity may not be there any longer for others. Music is so important to Welsh culture, how the capital city's university can entertain cancelling its music courses is beyond me.
I feel especially heartbroken for the staff, who have all shown immense support to us students in the past 24 hours of the news breaking, despite themselves being at risk of redundancy. Their selflessness and desire to put the students and their educations first is extremely admirable.
Q: Where can I find tabs? A: I mostly try to learn the songs I cover by ear, but occasionally I will use tabs or chord sheets (but not often). When I do, I tend to prefer Songsterr <www.songsterr.com/> or Ultimate Guitar <www.ultimate-guitar.com/>. Songsterr is typically my first choice because it has moving play-along tabs on the free version, however the variety of tabs are sometimes more limited than Ultimate Guitar, so for more obscure songs I will use Ultimate Guitar. If I can't find an accurate tab from either of these, I use the speed adjustment feature on YouTube to slow down the parts I'm trying to figure out so I can hear them better.
Q: What are your amp settings? A: My amp setting vary from song to song, and can be hard to describe due to the amp I have. I use a Fender Champion 40w, which rather than having a simple distortion/overdrive channel, has presets to emulate various tones (which makes it hard to describe my tone, as I don't know the original settings of the preset). I most often get asked for my Billie Joe Armstrong tone, so the best I can do to help is say that you want your treble higher than your bass (I tend to go for 7 and 4), and your gain riding around 6-8, depending on how aggressive your overdrive channel is. I also have low levels of reverb and delay (rolled in at around 2-3 on my amp), and for solos I will occasionally up the gain for a boost. Earlier Green Day tones will have higher gain but albums such as Warning and the trilogy have much lower gain. For bands like Weezer and The Darkness, my tone is largely the same, the only changes being the gain level in slight adjustments (the main difference with these bands is the type of guitar/pickups being used).
Q: What tuning is the song? A: I put all tuning details in the description of my videos, along with my gear details (amp, guitar, any pedals used, etc).
Q: Can you cover "X" song? A: Yes! I probably can (eventually)! I'm currently studying at university and uni accommodation makes it hard to record videos. As a solution I record in bulk when I'm at home every few months, and schedule them until I'm home again to record. When I do cover suggested songs, I always prioritise their uploads over the others.
Q: How do you record your amp? A: I have a relatively cheap setup, it isn't optimal but it's what works for me until I can put money aside for better recording gear. I always use a MacBook to record, my older videos were done with GarageBand but I now use Logic Pro. I use a Blue Snowball USB microphone to record my amp, set up on a tripod in front of the speaker. It's not meant for recording guitar, however I already owned it from previous projects and have continued to use it until now. In future I hope to buy a proper studio level recording microphone, but until then this works just fine.
Q: Why the nail polish? A: I like it.
I hope this was helpful for most people! I've seen a lot of the same questions get asked, so I thought it'd be best to put all of the information in one place to save time :)
