ABOUT SRAVASTI ABBEY

Sravasti Abbey is among the first of its kind—an American Buddhist monastic community where nuns and monks and lay students learn, practice, and live the Buddha’s teachings.

Founded in 2003 by author, teacher, and fully ordained nun Venerable Thubten Chodron, we practice Tibetan Buddhism in the tradition of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

While monastic training is the focus, lay guests are also welcome to experience community life, offer service, and experience the kindness of others.

The Abbey’s network is much wider than the 370-acre property in rural Washington State. Through the web, Sravasti Abbey is interconnected with friends around the world.

Vibe with Venerables Episode 07-08: WAS BUDDHA A SOCIAL ACTIVIST? BODHISATTVAS IN THE CHARNEL GROUNDS with Roshi Joan Halifax

Welcome to Episode 07 and 08 of the Vibe with Venerable series, where we talk “live” to Buddhist masters together.

Episode 07 (May 20) - WAS BUDDHA A SOCIAL ACTIVIST?
Description: We explore one view of Buddha's life and the lives of some of his radical successors, a two thousand five hundred year leap through time and space. Not all agree with this version of history and of Buddhism, but history is a way we can illuminate our lives, learn from the past, discover the present, and make a new road into the future. And Buddhism has many dharma doors, including ones that seem unlikely or for some, that seem very congruent with actualizing practice to be of benefit to others.

Episode 08 (May 27) - BODHISATTVAS IN THE CHARNEL GROUNDS
Description: The charnel grounds are where we all practice, from between your ears to between warring nations. This is what Bodhisattvas do. They do not seek easy situations. This talk explores the Bodhisattva attitude and seven keys to meeting the suffering in our world today.

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Roshi Joan Halifax, Ph.D. is a Buddhist teacher, Founder and Head Teacher of Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a social activist, author, and in her early years was an anthropologist at Columbia University (1964-68) and University of Miami School of Medicine (1970-72). She is a pioneer in the field of end-of-life care. She has lectured on the subject of death and dying at many academic institutions and medical centers around the world.

Welcome to Episode 06 of the Vibe with Venerable series, where we talk “live” to Buddhist masters together.

THIS EPISODE: ANUSSATI, THE OTHER MINDFULNESS

9 May 2025 (Friday), 3pm US Pacific, 6pm US Eastern, 11pm London
10 May 2025 (Saturday), 6am Singapore, 8am Brisbane/Sydney

REGISTRATION LINK: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/Gb83Tnz_Ssym1lr1P…

Mindfulness meditation has become extremely popular of late, to the extent of overshadowing other meditations the Buddha taught. In his talk, Bhante will explore a less well known mindfulness practice called anussati in which memory, self-examination, one’s relationships and potential are evoked to enrich one’s spiritual journey.

ABOUT THE VENERABLE

Bhante Shravasti Dhammika was born in Australia in 1951 and became a Buddhist at the age of 18. In 1973 he went to Thailand with the intention of becoming a monk and from there to Laos, Burma and finally to India. For the next three years, he traveled around India learning yoga and meditation and finally ordained under Venerable Matiwella Sangharatna, the last disciple of Anagarika Dharmapala. In 1976 he went to Sri Lanka where he studied Pali at Sri Lanka Vidyalaya and later became one of the co-founders of the Nilambe Meditation Centre and one of its teachers. Since then, he has spent most of his time in Sri Lanka and Singapore and represented Theravada Buddhism at the European Buddhist Millennium Conference in Berlin in 2000. Bhante Dhammika written over 25 books and scores of articles on Buddhism and related subjects, and his recent book, Footprints in the Dust, has received much comment for its unique approach to the life of the Buddha.

Prapañca (Pali: papañca; Chinese: 妄想) is an important concept in the Buddhist understanding of how conflict arises at the individual and collective level. We will explore texts that explain prapañca and describe how to cut through clinging to it, for our benefit and the benefit of the world.

Episode 04. The Mind’s Tendency to Spread Conflict: Why does Prapañca cause conflict

Come Vibe with Venerables, and Engage with Buddhist Elders

Friends,
Good news: We are thrilled to introduce the Vibe with Venerables series where each week, we get to talk “live” to a Buddhist master together.

Here is the idea:
⏺ Live, interactive, and open to all. We will meet online and learn together, “live”, with a Venerable. The Venerable can choose to pre-record the talk, but the Q&A will always be “live”—because real dialogue is where wisdom deepens.

⏺ Exposure to different Venerables. We will be inviting different Venerable teachers from all three major schools of Buddhism to lead the Dharma & dialogue sessions with us.

⏺ One hour. We begin with a roughly 30-minute Dharma talk by a Venerable monastic, followed by 30 minutes of “live” Q&A, where attendees can ask questions and engage directly with the speaker.

⏺ Cadence. We plan for a weekly cadence of the live Dharma & dialogue, with a specific Venerable. Then, we might break for a little bit, and another Venerable will be invited to lead the next few sessions.

⏺ Consistent and structured. We commit to a fixed day and time each week for the same Venerable, starting with a 2-4 week series per Venerable. When another Venerable comes on, the time and date of the week may change.

⏺ 100% donation-based. You are welcome to attend completely free. All donations go entirely to the Venerable’s organization in the spirit of dāna, the practice of cultivating generosity.

Why This Matters
The Buddha named good spiritual friendship (kalyāṇa mittatā), which includes having both good spiritual friends and good spiritual teachers, as “the first vital condition for the development of the factors of enlightenment.” [Ref: Aṅguttara Nikāya 9.1] We hope that in addition to learning Dharma, this series will also help you gain the good spiritual friendship necessary for your eventual enlightenment.

We can’t wait to meet you online. More details coming soon.
