Ashadi Ekadashi – The Most Sacred Day for Vithoba Bhaktas

Also called Shayani Ekadashi, it falls on the 11th lunar day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha month-6th July

🛕 Why It Is Special in Pandharpur:
• Pandharpur, in Maharashtra, is the divine abode of Lord Vithoba (a form of Lord Krishna/Vishnu).
• On Ashadi Ekadashi, lakhs of Varkaris (devotees) arrive in Pandharpur on foot in a sacred tradition called “Wari” — walking for days with devotion, singing abhangs and chanting “Vithal Vithal”.
• This day marks the start of Lord Vishnu’s four-month yoga-nidra (sleep) — Chaturmasya Vratam.
• Devotees believe that a darshan of Vithoba-Rakhumai on this day brings blessings for spiritual upliftment, health, and liberation.

🙌 Spiritual Significance:
• Vithoba stands with arms on hips, waiting for His devotees – a symbol of divine love and patience.
• Sant Tukaram, Sant Dnyaneshwar, Sant Namdev and other great saints have composed thousands of abhangs and bhajans glorifying this day and the Lord.
• For Krishna devotees, Ashadi Ekadashi is as sacred as Janmashtami.

🌸 The Story in Brief:

Pundalik was once a careless son, but when he realized the importance of serving his parents, he became a devoted son. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Krishna came to meet him.

When the Lord arrived, Pundalik was busy serving his parents, so he threw a brick (Vittha) for Krishna to stand on and asked Him to wait. The Lord, pleased with his bhakti (devotion), stood on the brick with hands on His waist, patiently waiting.

Krishna then took the form of Vitthal (one who stands on a brick) and decided to stay in Pandharpur to bless devotees forever.

“O Vithoba of Pandharpur, on this Ashadi Ekadashi, bless us with unwavering devotion and the strength to walk the path of dharma. Just as the Varkaris walk to Your temple, may our hearts always walk toward You.” 🙏
