Οι αντικατοπτρισμοί της λίμνης Κουρνά, Κρήτη 🌿💧

Νωρίς το πρωί, πριν ο ήλιος ανέβει ψηλά και η ζέστη της ημέρας κάνει αισθητή την παρουσία της, η λίμνη Κουρνά αποκαλύπτει την πιο ήρεμη και μαγευτική της πλευρά. Η πρωινή δροσιά, το απαλό φως και η σχεδόν ακίνητη επιφάνεια του νερού δημιουργούν φυσικούς καθρέφτες, όπου τα βουνά, τα δέντρα και ο ουρανός μοιάζουν να συνεχίζονται μέσα στη λίμνη.

Η λίμνη Κουρνά βρίσκεται κοντά στη Γεωργιούπολη, στα Χανιά, ανάμεσα στους πρόποδες των Λευκών Ορέων και την Κρητική θάλασσα. Είναι η μοναδική φυσική λίμνη γλυκού νερού της Κρήτης και ένας σημαντικός υγροτοπικός βιότοπος, προστατευμένος στο δίκτυο Natura 2000.

Στην αρχαιότητα ήταν γνωστή ως Κορησία και σύμφωνα με την παράδοση στην περιοχή υπήρχε ιερός χώρος αφιερωμένος στην Κορησία Αθηνά. Το σημερινό όνομα «Κουρνάς» θεωρείται ότι προέρχεται από την αραβική λέξη για τη λίμνη, από την περίοδο της αραβικής κυριαρχίας στην Κρήτη.

Η λίμνη αλλάζει μορφή ανάλογα με την εποχή. Τον χειμώνα και την άνοιξη η στάθμη του νερού ανεβαίνει, ενώ το καλοκαίρι υποχωρεί και αποκαλύπτει μια αμμώδη λωρίδα στις όχθες. Τα νερά της τροφοδοτούνται από υπόγειες πηγές και επιφανειακές απορροές, ενώ το μέγιστο βάθος της φτάνει περίπου τα 22,5 μέτρα.

Στα νερά και στις όχθες της φιλοξενούνται πάπιες, νερόκοτες, ερωδιοί, κορμοράνοι, χέλια, νερόφιδα και σπάνιες νεροχελώνες. Ένας μικρός, ζωντανός κόσμος που κάνει τη λίμνη ακόμη πιο ξεχωριστή.

Και φυσικά, η Κουρνά δεν θα μπορούσε να μην έχει τους δικούς της θρύλους. Για αιώνες κυκλοφορούσε η πεποίθηση πως η λίμνη ήταν «άπατη», επειδή τα σκοτεινά νερά στο κέντρο της δημιουργούσαν την αίσθηση ενός μυστηριώδους, ατελείωτου βάθους. Οι μετρήσεις απέδειξαν όμως ότι η λίμνη έχει συγκεκριμένο πυθμένα.

Ο πιο γνωστός θρύλος μιλά για μια όμορφη ξανθιά κοπέλα που, σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, εμφανίζεται τα φεγγαρόλουστα βράδια πάνω σε έναν βράχο και χτενίζει τα μαλλιά της. Σε μια εκδοχή του θρύλου, η λίμνη δημιουργήθηκε όταν η κοπέλα ζήτησε να βουλιάξει η γη για να σωθεί. Σε μια άλλη, η λίμνη δημιουργήθηκε από έναν μεγάλο κατακλυσμό που τιμώρησε τους κατοίκους ενός χωριού που βρισκόταν εκεί.

Μύθος, ιστορία και φύση συναντιούνται λοιπόν σε αυτόν τον ξεχωριστό τόπο της Κρήτης.

Και ίσως η πιο όμορφη στιγμή για να τη γνωρίσεις είναι ακριβώς αυτή: νωρίς το πρωί, με τη δροσιά ακόμη στον αέρα, πριν ο ήλιος ανέβει ψηλά… όταν το νερό ησυχάζει και η λίμνη γίνεται ένας τεράστιος φυσικός καθρέφτης. 🌿✨

Reflections of Lake Kournas, Crete 🌿💧

Early in the morning, before the sun rises high and the heat of the day takes over, Lake Kournas reveals its most peaceful and magical side. The morning freshness, the soft light and the almost perfectly still water create natural mirrors, reflecting the mountains, trees and sky as if the landscape continues beneath the surface.

Lake Kournas is located near Georgioupolis in Chania, between the foothills of the White Mountains and the Cretan Sea. It is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete and an important wetland habitat, protected as part of the Natura 2000 network.

In ancient times, the lake was known as Korisia, and according to tradition, a sanctuary dedicated to Athena Korisia may have stood in the area. Its present name, Kournas, is believed to have originated from the Arabic word for “lake” during the period of Arab rule in Crete.

The lake changes with the seasons. During winter and spring, its water level rises, while in summer it recedes, revealing a sandy strip along the shores. Its waters are fed by underground springs and surface runoff, and the lake reaches a maximum depth of about 22.5 metres.

Its waters and surrounding vegetation provide a home for ducks, moorhens, herons, cormorants, eels, water snakes and rare freshwater turtles. A small but remarkably rich ecosystem that makes Lake Kournas even more special.

And, of course, Kournas has its own legends. For centuries, people believed that the lake was bottomless, as the dark waters in its centre created a mysterious impression of endless depth. Modern measurements, however, have shown that the lake does have a definite bottom.

The best-known legend tells of a beautiful blonde girl who, according to local folklore, appears on moonlit nights sitting on a rock and combing her hair. One version says that the lake was created when the girl wished for the land to sink so that she could escape. Another tells of a great flood that punished the inhabitants of a village that once stood in the area.

Here, mythology, history and nature come together in one of Crete’s most enchanting landscapes.

And perhaps the most beautiful time to experience it is just like this: early in the morning, with the cool freshness still in the air, before the sun climbs high… when the water becomes still and the lake turns into a giant natural mirror. 🌿✨

The **Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial** in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, is one of the most moving sites of remembrance from World War II.

Overlooking Omaha Beach, the cemetery is the final resting place of **9,389 American servicemen** who lost their lives during the Normandy landings and the battles that followed. The endless rows of white crosses and Stars of David stand as a powerful reminder of the human cost of freedom.

Le **cimetière américain de Normandie et son mémorial**, situé à Colleville-sur-Mer, en Normandie, est l’un des lieux de mémoire les plus émouvants de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Surplombant la plage d’Omaha, le cimetière abrite les tombes de **9 389 militaires américains** tombés lors du Débarquement de Normandie et des combats qui ont suivi. Les longues rangées de croix blanches et d’étoiles de David rappellent avec force le prix humain de la liberté.
