AI is a part of our generation now. Whether you like it or not AI exists! UMG revealed that, as of today, its negotiations for a new contract with TikTok have ended without an agreement, and that the expiring contract will not be renewed. That means that, if a new contract is not agreed upon today, music by artists including Taylor Swift, Drake, and Bad Bunny will not be available for use in videos on the social media platform. Many of my edits on tiktok have been muted. And this isnāt just effecting editors, this is effecting creators as well. It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters.
Despite Universalās false narrative and rhetoric, the fact is they have chosen to walk away from the powerful support of a platform with well over a billion users that serves as a free promotional and discovery vehicle for their talent.
TikTok has been able to reach āartist-firstā agreements with every other label and publisher. Clearly, Universalās self-serving actions are not in the best interests of artists, songwriters and fans. I will be switching all of my edits over to YouTube and Instagram. Iāve been on YouTube for years but Instagram will be a new experience for me.
