Sculpting Masterclass with Amelia Rowcroft

What is ‘Sculpting at Home’ and where did it come from I hear you ask? Well, in all honesty I have had some time on my hands as work has been very thin in the ground lately. I’m not sure if it’s the worldwide cost of living crisis or the AI boom or what but I’ve been out of work for the first time in ages. I got to thinking about what I could do in my studio that would be fun, and hopefully helpful to fellow sculptors. The world seems pretty fractious and bleak right now, so I’ve been feeling nostalgic for what feels like simpler times- the glorious 1980s of my cosy childhood, when I would just sit on the floor of my bedroom for endless days making whatever weird and wonderful creations I could manage with the cardboard and glue my teacher Dad would snaffle from the school art cupboard for me. I thought, wouldn’t it be great to try and help people have a go at sculpting in their own home! We have already made a series of very detailed online courses on sculpting portraits and figures, but I thought it would be a good idea to make something a bit more fun to try and reach a new audience on YouTube. So I made a little set- for minimal expense, using stuff I could gather or crochet myself to look right for the era. I hired a fantastic model Mark, and set to work. I sculpted his portrait twice to get as much footage as possible. The idea is that people can buy the reference pack with all the photos and measurements to sculpt along at home. There are twenty episodes covering the whole sculpting process, plus two long videos with just my hands sculpting, broken down into each episode. The technique I use is the same as I teach in my more detailed course Strong Foundations. We are releasing an episode every Monday, and we are up to number 5 right now. I think the only way we can stem the rise of AI art is to keep people making things with their hands. If you would like to support me in this project, please take a look and help me get more views. Another brand new slowed-down sculpting video with descriptive voiceover has dropped on my YouTube channel… this time it’s Tom Holland!
Have you ever thought you would like to see some of our quick sculpting videos slowed down a bit?
Back in time, many many years ago when I started sharing pictures and videos of my work on social media there was a one minute limit for videos. I thought it would be interesting to film various stages during the sculpting process (when I was doing my commercial work- making waxwork heads) and see what they looked like edited together- so condensing around three weeks work into a minute. People seemed to like them, so I did this for quite a few of the heads I sculpted over the years. Well, our much-cooler-than-us younger colleagues inform us that people like watching slower videos nowadays, and these restrictions are no longer in place. So, since we are now sprucing up my YouTube channel ready for our brand new series ‘Sculpting at Home’ we thought perhaps people might like to see some of this video footage re-cut to be a slower, and potentially more-interesting-from-a-sculptor’s-perspective experience.
