Critical Reviews of Online Personalities, with occasional Adventures in Fact Checking

I'm reviewing the internet, one content creator/influencer/podcaster at a time - to help you know who's worth following, and when to smash that mute button. I choose people I'm already familiar with, and take suggestions from viewers too.
I'm trying to make this a largely positive project - to platform good people, and encourage civil and constructive debate.

I also occasionally do videos for my "TINY LIES" series, which are investigative adventures in fact-checking in this crazy post-truth era we're in.

For the reviews, my criteria are:
1) Trustworthiness - can you generally trust this is factual?
2) Transparency - are they transparent about political bias, perspective, or incentives?
3) Accountability - do they correct themselves when they're wrong, and engage in good faith with their audience?
4) Value - do they offer something of value to the discourse?

Hi! A note from me on how I see the world...

Shoutout to all the recent subscribers - thank you very much for joining the channel :)

If you found me via one of my “Tiny Lies” videos, which have gone a little bit viral on TikTok - welcome! I should clarify that’s not the main thing I do here, BUT, they’re fun and I will be doing more of them and filing them in their own playlist, so they’re easy to find if that’s what you’re into.

My main mission here though, is critically reviewing other online content creators/commentators/influencers/channels, etc. I consider them in terms of their trustworthiness, their transparency, their accountability, and the value they offer to the discourse. There are no media gatekeepers anymore, which has had good and bad consequences. It’s up to us to decide who is worth listening to, and who should be ignored.

I especially want to promote and platform people who are putting Good Stuff out there, because it can be so hard to discover it in the mountain of trash and noise of the online world. (I will, on occasion, flag sources I think should be avoided at all costs with negative reviews, but I’m trying to make this a largely positive project.) And I want to encourage a positive and healthy debate culture in the comments & community sections of the channel.

I have been meaning to do an update for months where I outline my own perspective/bias/political persuasion etc, so that you know where I'm coming from - that kind of transparency is something I consider when I'm reviewing other creators, and I should really offer it myself. I haven't done so yet because (a) it's been hard to find the time! but (b) mainly because I've been struggling to work out how to describe myself. I don't have a strong political ideology, and am a bit all over the place on different issues. The world is so nuts at the moment, and the concept of ‘right’ and ‘left’ wing seems so muddy that I feel quite politically homeless.

There are, though, a few values I hold pretty dear and Things That I Think Are Good. These include: free speech (not with zero limits, obviously); publicly funded education and healthcare; not discriminating against anyone for their race, sex, gender identity, sexuality, appearance, nationality, age, or ability; and individual autonomy. I think climate change is real and that we should be trying very hard to deal with it (though I am less firm on exactly what course of action is best). I don’t like identity politics. I am an atheist, but far less annoying about it than I was in my 20s after going through my insufferable Richard-Dawkins-God-Delusion phase, and now have much more respect and understanding (and even envy!) for those who have a faith. I guess I am probably best described as some mix of social democrat and classical liberal. I will try to make clear my own position on any specific issue (where I have one) if it is central to one of my videos.

Really, my strongest passion is the pursuit of facts, and truth, and the collective fight against bullshit. And I use the word "bullshit" very deliberately - in the sense of Harry G Frankfurt: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Bullshit

I feel that this is the central issue of our time. So much division today seems to me to stem from an inability or refusal to accept reality. I see way too many people - from all across the political spectrum - sacrificing truth for the sake of winning an argument.

I will definitely get things wrong here. My take on someone might be way off the mark! Please - do let me know - I am very willing to make corrections, or reconsider my position, or even pushback (politely!) if I disagree. I feel that the more of us that are engaging in these things in good faith, the better.

As always - I welcome your suggestions and feedback, you can leave comments here or email me directly at theinternetreviewed@gmail.com

Hello to all who've kindly taken an interest in this channel! I thought I should leave a quick note to say I'm still at it - it's just taking me a lot longer than I'd like to start getting videos out again after the chaos of the Christmas break and a torturously long school/daycare holiday period, which is ongoing until February. The juggle is real.
As always I love hearing your feedback and suggestions/requests for who you'd like to see reviewed - in fact, my next review will be of a YouTuber that a number of people have requested I take a look at. How's that for a tease? ;)
Hopefully it'll be with you sometime next month. Thanks for your patience :)
