In this video, I am trying out the Brown Sound 78/79 Signature collection for ToneX by IK Multimedia for the first time. I have never heard anything like it! Thank you very much @ikmultimedia for sending me the ToneX pedal to try out. Special mention to Jim Gaustad for working with IK Multimedia by supplying all the equipment from the period to capture these amazing tones.
IK MULTIMEDIA'S WORDS:
''The Brown Sound 78/79 is the first in a limited series of three exceptional TONEX Signature Collections, diving deep into the legendary guitar tones that helped define modern rock. Using period-correct gear and an obsessive attention to detail, this collection features 50 Tone Models that capture the unmistakable sound of the rock icon’s first two groundbreaking albums.
Every decision behind the Brown Sound 78/79 was made to capture not just the gear, but also the attitude, the feel, and the raw sonic blueprint of a genre-defining moment in rock history. With a mix of confirmed and speculated setups, including alternate speakers such as the 4x12 combo cab loaded with two vintage JBL D120s and two 25W Greenbacks, these Tone Models deliver stunning accuracy and creative flexibility. Complete the experience with Sunset Sound Studio Reverb and recreate the tone that changed guitar forever.''
THE COLLECTION:
- 50 exceptional Tone Models for use across the entire TONEX ecosystem
- Based on a ′68 Marshall® Super Lead modified to serial number #12301 specs
- Models feature multiple 1960 Marshall cabs with different speakers (Black backs and Green backs)
- Details include running the signal through specific pedals and a Vega wireless
- Captured using period spec studio gear, just like the original recordings
- Created using AI Machine Modeling™ technology with advanced training
- Compatible with all TONEX software versions, including the free TONEX CS
- Tone Models can easily be loaded to TONEX pedals for live performance
THE AMP:
At the heart of the Brown Sound 78/79 collection is “The ONE” — a meticulously crafted Marshall-style amp built from the ground up with the exact same spec as the infamous 1968 Super Lead serial number #12301, including crucial mods that capture the DNA of the early brown sound like no other amp model.
A big part of that sound comes from the Fat Cap mod, a custom tweak to the preamp’s second gain stage that increases low-frequency gain and creates that signature chewy midrange and hair on every note. Combined with a 50K mid pot (which shifts the EQ balance toward a more vocal, aggressive midrange), as found on the legendary #12301 Plexi, the amp punches with the exact presence and attitude heard on the earliest Brown Sound recordings.
I am loving the NEW rebrand @elixir_strings It looks so much better, well done! I love the new logo and how vibrant the new packs look.
I've been using Elixir Strings for many years now and they will always be my favourite thanks to their coating. Fresh string clarity and tone for months on end, literally. Since I am player that uses a lot of Floyd Rose guitars, that makes my life so much easier and if you haven't tried them yet, you'll notice the benefits as well.
@elixir_strings make so many different gauges, we are spoilt for choice! My favourite gauges for their Optiweb strings are:
09-42 (Standard tuning and half step down) 10-46 (Standard tuning OR Full Step down) 10-52 Light Heavy (Drop C) 09-52 7 String (Standard tuning) 12-68 Baritone (B Standard)
The RAT Sterling Vermin Distortion - This Pedal is Nirvana in a box. A fantastic pedal made for big fat riffs! Really looking forward to making a video on this!
Thank you to Black Mountain for sending over a couple of FREEDOM SLIDES to try out. These came out of the blue and think they could be a really cool tool to help me explore other areas of my guitar playing. I secretly play quite a bit of slide guitar and always enjoyed the idea that some day someone would invent a slide that would enable me to play my normal heavy rock but also allow me to dip into slide playing without having to take anything off my fingers. They really work! If this appeals to any of you check out : www.blackmountainpicks.com
I am using the small slide ring but they come in a range of different sizes to suit all.
I love this guitar! Just got it out of storage for a video I want to do.
It's a limited edition Gretsch Electromatic G5232 in Daphne Blue. Pickups were upgraded to DiMarzio Super Distor'Tron and PAF'TRON pickups.
Cool story about this guitar. I got it from Anderton's as part of a FSR run made specifically for them. There were four guitars in the range, all of them variations on this theme. Two Daphne blue versions, a single cut and double cut with gold hardware like you see here. Then two others in shell pink - a single cut and double cut each with chrome hardware. From what I've been lead to believe there were only 50 of each guitar in the range made.
I ordered this guitar in Feb 2022 when storm Eunice was hitting the South of England really hard. After a week of waiting a guitar arrived. A beautiful shell pink Squire Bass 6. Which was amazing, but not the guitar I ordered. Despite the slight shipping mix up due to the storm, Anderton's service was absolutely fantastic and resolved the situation very quickly and my Gretsch arrived a few days later - just as storm Eunice was pummeling my neck of the woods. Nothing bad to say about Andertons at all, they were great! This guitar plays and sounds like a dream! And once the DiMarzios went in, it is now an absolute fire breather. A heavy metal Gretsch styled like a glamorous rockabilly classic.
I occasionally name guitars in my collection if there's something cool or distinctive about it. This guitar remained nameless for a long time until I got it out of storage the other day and was reminded of the heavy storm and the slight shipping mix up while this guitar was on it's way to me. I have now named the guitar Eunice after the storm. Suits it quite well methinks.
