How Communication Works

I'm creating a course to teach the kind of listening that transforms relationships — the kind that eases loneliness, deepens friendships, and brings more meaning to every conversation.

It’s called: The Listening Leap: Illuminating the Attentive Heart.

If you want to connect more deeply with the people you care about — to brighten every relationship with your presence and attention — I’d love to have you on the early access list.

How Communication Works

I've just added French, Portuguese, Chinese, Hindi, and Spanish titles, descriptions, and subtitles to several of my most popular videos and shorts. My hope is that this will allow people who don't speak English to have better access to my videos. If you speak one of these languages, it would be great if you could check them out and let me know how accurate the titles, descriptions, and subtitles are. I used a combination of ChatGPT and Apple's built-in translation software to do the translations.

You can just go to my channel and sort videos or shorts by popularity. Check out the top three or four videos and shorts. Those should have new non-English titles, descriptions, and subtitles. Thanks, and let me know what you think.

How Communication Works

I'm going to identify 10 behaviors that might make people think you're weird or socially awkward—and how you can improve them. (The video says 11, but I miscounted or edited one out.)

If you prefer, watch the video here: https://youtu.be/rVJ5z_BrRCE

Social awkwardness can seriously impact your quality of life, causing isolation and emotional pain. General advice like "just be yourself" isn't helpful when you're struggling. Specific feedback is essential. While individual coaching is ideal, here are 10 common behaviors you can start addressing immediately:

1. Eye Contact: Too much or too little eye contact makes you appear uncomfortable or uninterested. Balance eye contact, looking away occasionally when speaking, but maintain steady eye contact when listening.

2. Personal Space: Respect cultural norms for personal space (in the U.S., about 12-18 inches). Being too close or too distant can feel awkward.

3. Hygiene: Poor oral or general hygiene can isolate you. Regular showers, good dental care, and deodorants are standard social expectations in the U.S.

4. No Filter: Avoid discussing controversial topics or saying things without regard to social norms or politeness. Learn conversational boundaries to avoid offending others.

5. Face Work: Social interactions require helping others maintain dignity. Prevent embarrassment (your own and others') by understanding and observing social etiquette.

6. Self-Disclosure: Reveal personal details gradually, matching the intimacy level of the conversation. Too much too soon or never revealing anything about yourself can seem odd or untrustworthy.

7. Relevance: Stay on-topic. Abruptly changing subjects or unrelated comments can make interactions awkward.

8. Entrances & Exits: Smoothly enter and exit conversations. Recognize cues when someone wants to leave or when you're invited into a conversation.

9. Back Channel Cues: Show active listening with small signals like "uh-huh" or "mm-hmm" to indicate you're engaged.

10. Empathy: Demonstrate understanding and compassion toward others' feelings. Lacking empathy can make you seem distant or cold.

All these behaviors can be learned and improved. Even if you face social challenges, consistent practice can greatly reduce awkwardness. Remember, having unique ideas or being a bit quirky is fine—but improving these key communication skills can significantly help your social interactions.
