John Lennon's Death Story John Lennon, the legendary member of The Beatles, was shot dead on December 8, 1980, in front of his apartment, The Dakota, in New York City. The shooter was Mark David Chapman, an obsessed fan, who fired five shots (four hitting the body) as Lennon returned from a recording session. Lennon was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. Here are the key details of John Lennon's death: Time and Place: December 8, 1980, at approximately 10:50 PM local time, at the gate of The Dakota apartment in Manhattan. The shooter was Mark David Chapman, a 25-year-old former security guard from Hawaii, who had been waiting for Lennon since morning and had asked him to autograph his copy of the album Double Fantasy a few hours before the murder. Chapman, who had a love/hate relationship with the Beatles, was disturbed by Lennon's lifestyle and his comments about the band's popularity. He considered himself the main character in the book Catcher in the Rye. After the shooting, Chapman did not flee and waited for police while reading a book. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison, with repeated parole requests denied (most recently in 2025). Lennon's death caused global mourning and ended hopes of a Beatles reunion. Lennon's body was cremated on December 10, 1980, and his ashes were given to his wife, Yoko Ono.
