In Pakistan, false accusations of blasphemy are widespread and often motivated by personal vendettas or religious hatred. Accusations are inflammatory and have the potential to spark mob lynching, vigilante murders, and mass protests.
Since Pakistan added Section 295-B and 295-C to the country’s blasphemy laws in 1987, the number of blasphemy accusations have skyrocketed. Between 1987 and 2017, 1,534 individuals in Pakistan are being accused of blasphemy. Out of that 1,534, 829 accusations (54%), were against religious minorities. With Christians only making up 1.6% of Pakistan’s total population, the 251 accusations (17.5%) made against Christians is disproportionate.
Currently, 29 Christians are in prison due to blasphemy charges in Pakistan. These 29 Christians are defendants in 21 blasphemy cases represented at various levels of the judicial process in Pakistan.

Pakistan: Shouqat Javaid, an elderly Christian man with no immediate family, lived alone in a modest room and led a quiet and isolated life, until he became the subject of false blasphemy allegations.
In May 2024, a local resident, Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmed, claimed that while passing nearby, he allegedly heard Shouqat loudly making blasphemous remarks about Muslims and figures of Islam from inside his room. He further alleged that Shouqat used abusive language regarding the companions of the Muhammad and stated that such behavior was habitual. Two individuals, Mehtab Ahmed and Ali Zaib, were later cited as witnesses in support of these accusations.
Based on these claims, Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmed filed a report with the police. A case was subsequently registered against Shouqat Javaid under Section 298-A of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which relates to alleged insulting remarks against the family members of the Muhammad. Following the registration of the FIR, Shouqat was arrested.
After his arrest, a post-arrest bail application was filed on his behalf. Upon hearing the arguments, the court granted bail.
The case proceedings continued over an extended period. From September 2024 to January 2026, approximately 13 hearings were adjourned. These delays were primarily due to the complainant’s repeated failure to appear before the court and inability to produce sufficient evidence to support the allegations.
On March 6, 2026, a petition under Section 249-A of the Code of Criminal Procedure (Cr.P.C.) was presented before the court, seeking acquittal on the grounds of lack of evidence. Upon reviewing the case record, the court determined that there was insufficient evidence to proceed and dismissed the case. Shouqat Javaid was acquitted of all charges.
The case reflects the legal process surrounding allegations made under blasphemy-related provisions, including arrest, bail, prolonged proceedings, and eventual acquittal due to lack of evidence.
