G. K. Venkatesh was one of the true musical legends of Kannada cinema. His music gave Kannada film songs a distinct identity and took them to audiences far beyond Karnataka.

Known for constantly experimenting with sound and composition, he created songs that continue to live on even decades later. Over his remarkable career, he composed music for more than a hundred Kannada films. He also played an important role in encouraging Dr. Rajkumar to sing as a playback singer.

Today, on G. K. Venkatesh’s 99th birth anniversary, we celebrate the man and the music with a special carousel.

ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರ ಕಾಲದ ವಚನ ಚಳುವಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಸಂಖ್ಯಾತ ವಚನಕಾರರು ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಕೇವಲ ಅವರು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೇ, ಅನೇಕ ವಚನಕಾರ್ತಿಯರು ಕೂಡ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಪಾತ್ರ ನಿಭಾಯಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ತಮ್ಮ ‘ಕಾಯಕ’ದ ಮೂಲಕವೇ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾದ ವಚನೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನೇಕಾರ, ಜಾಡಮಾಲಿ, ಆಯ್ದಕ್ಕಿ, ಕಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ತರುವುದು ಹೀಗೆ ವೃತ್ತಿಗಳೇ ವಚನಗಳಿಗೆ ಶಕ್ತಿಯೂ, ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ ಕೆಲವು ವಚನಕಾರ್ತಿಯರ ವಚನಗಳು.

Do you know about H. S. Doreswamy, one of Karnataka’s most remarkable freedom fighters?

A committed Gandhian, he was inspired by Gandhi’s writings to join India’s freedom struggle. He went on to take part in the Quit India Movement, the Mysore Chalo Movement, and several other social movements through his life.

Born in Harohalli, Ramanagara, Doreswamy lived to the age of 104 and remained one of Karnataka’s last living links to the freedom movement.

This Independence Day, we remember H. S. Doreswamy and a life spent standing up for freedom, justice and people.

ಕನ್ನಡದ ಖ್ಯಾತ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಾರ್ತಿ ತ್ರಿವೇಣಿ (ಅನುಸೂಯ ಶಂಕರ್) ಅವರು ಅಗಲಿ ಇಂದಿಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ 63 ವರ್ಷಗಳಾಯಿತು. ಆದರೂ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಕನ್ನಡ ಓದುಗರ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿದಿರುವ ಬರಹಗಾರ್ತಿ. 21 ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು, 3 ಕಥಾ ಸಂಕಲನಗಳು ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿವೆ. ಸುಮಾರು ಏಳು ಕೃತಿಗಳು ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಾಗಿಯೂ ಜನ ಮನ್ನಣೆ ಗಳಿಸಿವೆ.

It has been exactly 63 years today since celebrated Kannada novelist Triveni, born Anasuya Shankar, passed away. Yet her writing continues to live on in the hearts of Kannada readers.

She wrote 21 novels and three short-story collections, and nearly seven of her works were adapted into popular films.
