Dorothy Anthonio Yayra, a vibrant and ambitious student at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, had her curiosity instantly piqued when she came across the Women's Community Meetup at Node Eight while browsing social media. She saw it as the perfect chance to start her year on a positive note.

“Before, I would simply jot down my goals and hope for the best. But now, I've discovered a whole new approach that has transformed how I envision my future," she recounted.

She learned the importance of writing her goals down and creating a vision board to visualize her aspirations.

For Dorothy, one of the most significant aspects of the Women's Community Meetup was the opportunity to connect with like-minded women. Apart from her academic pursuits, She loves travelling, volunteering, reading, writing, and exploring new things.

Our #women’s meetup provided valuable sessions on goal setting, mindset development, and strategies for success, which resonated deeply with Dorothy's aspirations of becoming a sports psychologist. As part of this year's International Women's Day celebration, the Young Urban Women Movement of ActionAid has organized a career guidance workshop in STEM for girls at Ho in partnership with Node Eight under the theme "Bridging the Digital Divide: Harnessing the Capacity of Young Women for Innovation." 

Young girls were guided through the careers in tech they can pursue, and how to get started.

Once upon a time in 2007, two creative souls named Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia found themselves in a tight spot while attending a design conference in San Francisco. With scarce and pricey hotel rooms, the duo decided to offer up air mattresses in their humble abode to fellow conference-goers to make some extra cash naming it "Air Bed and Breakfast."

Little did they know this seemingly simple act of hospitality would birth one of the most successful companies of all time - Airbnb. Fast forward to 2021, the home-sharing giant is now worth a whopping 113 billion U.S. dollars.

What's the point of this story?

The story of Airbnb is a testament to the power of community and collaboration. It's a reminder that the support of a strong and creative network can be the catalyst that propels individuals toward their next big idea.

Without the San Francisco design community, Chesky and Gebbia may not have stumbled upon the idea that would change the way we travel forever. So, let this be a lesson to us all. Never underestimate the power of community in creating solutions to problems we are facing as Africans especially as young people growing up on the African Continent.
