In response to @alvarodelac860 recent question, can we use 'carry on an investigation' I would say, no, it's not a common collcoation. Here are some results from Google Ngrams. Interestingly, 'carry on an investigation' was more popular in the past (pre 1940s) but has fallen out of use. Language is constantly evolving!
