WHAT CAN’T WE DO?
It’s a question we creatives never ask ourselves. As we take on the world, dreams strapped to our backs, training in one hand, talent in the other, we often forget to ask that elusive yet obvious question. Forget because in most instances, being a creative is hard work. It’s that rise and grind, never not working, everyday I’m hustlin, kinda work. Every creative I know is a part-time Marketing Director, Project Manager, Agent, Accountant and full-time Artist. Ultra perfectionist introverts whose wonder-filled work will impact more people than they may ever really meet. And yet, amidst the sturm und drang of life’s many moments, we never quite give ourselves the credit that’s due, for what we do. What we can do.

Growing up my artistic heroes were giants. Masters of craft and creators of works so brilliant they inspired me to be who I am. Even now on my best days I feel their shadows cloaking me in inspiration but shrouding me in doubt. Whether you create on a stage or on the page, dress form or drafting table, you, we, I allow ourselves to doubt. We are just so accustomed to doubts and fears we seldom acknowledge how frequently we function in the face of them. How we can exist and often thrive in a thick mist of discomfort and weariness. The schism between being an artist and being a fraud lurks - humming like white noise in our quietest moments.

Yet, we create. We sketch. We sew. we sing. We dance. We succumb, not to the drone of our fear but the call of our heart’s inspiration. We embrace uncertainty and transform it to possibility; the seeds of our next great work. The fullness of your potential is unrealized, for what is truly possible hasn’t been tested.

This year we were tested. This year, as a tsunami of sorrow cascaded over our communities. As the world sat at home in silence, screaming for the specter of 2020 to drift away, we did what we do best, create. Art and Science saved the world this year. Thank you for all you made and all you gave. And as day breaks on a new year, remember…
