New video is up.
If your voice has been cracking more than it used to, your first instinct is probably to push harder. More air, more effort.
That's making it worse.
In this one I break down what's actually changing in your voice and why less force, not more, is the way back to smooth singing.
Worth ten minutes if this has been frustrating you.

If your high notes feel harder than they used to, it's easy to blame your breath or your range.

But there's one cause most singers miss — and it has nothing to do with either.

Jaw tension.

It's one of the most overlooked sources of vocal strain, especially after 50. The jaw holds on without you noticing, and suddenly your voice has to work twice as hard through the middle and upper range — even when everything else is fine.

Just published a short workout walking you through how to release it:

🎵 How jaw tension affects your high notes
🎵 Simple exercises to release and retrain the jaw
🎵 How to restore freedom and reduce strain

Nothing fancy. A handful of exercises designed to give your voice back the ease it's been missing.

Stay consistent with these and you'll start to notice more freedom through your middle and upper range.

Thinking about singing again but don't know where to begin? This video provides a straightforward, 5-step roadmap for anyone looking to reclaim their voice after a break.

Whether life got in the way, you were discouraged in the past, or you're simply navigating changes in your voice as you age, here is the plan to get back on track:

Step 1: Accept Your Voice Today – Let go of how you sounded 20 years ago and focus on your current potential.

Step 2: Start Small – Commit to just 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week to build the habit without burnout.

Step 3: Build Structure – Move from gentle warm-ups to targeted vocal workouts.

Step 4: Protect Your Instrument – Prioritize recovery, hydration, and listening to your body.

Step 5: Claim Your Birthright – Science shows the brain responds to musical training at any age. It is never too late to start.

Stop guessing and start singing again with a clear plan.

NEW VIDEO: Your voice isn't weak. It's leaking air. After 50, the vocal folds thin out and don't close completely — so you burn through air faster and fatigue sets in. The fix isn't singing more. It's targeted exercises that rebuild closure and endurance. New video shows you exactly how. https://youtu.be/OM7Yw9W99cI?si=vsz8f...

New video is up — and this one's important if you've noticed your pitch getting less reliable.

After 60, your brain's pitch correction reflex actually slows down. It's not your ear. It's a neurological shift that research has documented.

I put together a 5-minute workout — three exercises that specifically target the two systems your brain uses to stay on pitch. No warmups, no filler. Just the exercises.
If pitch accuracy matters to you, give this one a try.

Let me know in the comments how the pitch recovery drill feels — that one tends to surprise people.

If your voice feels unreliable in the first 30 minutes of the day, try this before anything else:

Gentle lip trills on a comfortable descending five-note scale. Two minutes. Low effort, low volume.

Your vocal folds need blood flow and gentle vibration to wake up. Over 50, they need more warm-up time than they used to — not because something is wrong, but because the tissue is stiffer in the morning. This is normal physiology, not decline.

Singers over 50 — "just accept it" is the worst advice you'll ever get.

Your vocal folds haven't broken. They've lost mass and closure — the same way any muscle loses tone without targeted training. The problem is that most vocal training wasn't designed with the aging voice in mind. So the standard advice defaults to acceptance.

It shouldn't. Muscles respond to exercise at any age. I've spent 30 years coaching singers through exactly this.

I put everything I know about it into my book The Mature Singer's Guidebook — it's an Amazon bestseller and you can download the full book as a free PDF here. products.johnhenny.com/free-mature-singers-guidebo…
