അന്ന് അർജന്റീനയെ നയിച്ചിരുന്നത് സാക്ഷാൽ ഡീഗോ മറഡോണയായിരുന്നു. ഈ മത്സരത്തിൽ അർജന്റീനയുടെ പേരിൽ ഫുട്ബോൾ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ ഇന്നും ചർച്ച ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്ന രണ്ട് ഐതിഹാസിക ഗോളുകൾ പിറന്നു. ആദ്യത്തേത് "ഹാൻഡ് ഓഫ് ഗോഡ്" എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഗോൾ. മത്സരത്തിന്റെ 51-ാം മിനിറ്റിൽ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിന്റെ ഗോൾകീപ്പർ പീറ്റർ ഷിൽട്ടണെ മറികടക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ച മറഡോണ, തന്റെ ഇടത് കൈ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് പന്ത് വലയിലാക്കി. റഫറിയുടെയും ലൈൻസ്മാന്റെയും ശ്രദ്ധയിൽ അത് പെടാതിരുന്നതിനാൽ ഗോൾ അനുവദിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. എന്നാൽ വെറും നാല് മിനിറ്റുകൾക്കുശേഷം മറഡോണ ലോകം കണ്ട എക്കാലത്തെയും മികച്ച ഗോളുകളിലൊന്ന് സമ്മാനിച്ചു. സ്വന്തം പകുതിയിൽ നിന്ന് പന്തുമായി കുതിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം അഞ്ച് ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പ്രതിരോധ താരങ്ങളെയും ഗോൾകീപ്പർ പീറ്റർ ഷിൽട്ടണെയും ഡ്രിബിൾ ചെയ്ത് മറികടന്ന് വല കുലുക്കി. ഫുട്ബോൾ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ ഈ ഗോൾ "ഗോൾ ഓഫ് ദ സെഞ്ചുറി" എന്ന പേരിലാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഒടുവിൽ ആ ക്വാർട്ടർ ഫൈനൽ മത്സരത്തിൽ അർജന്റീന 2–1ന് ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിനെ തോൽപ്പിച്ച് സെമിഫൈനലിലേക്ക് മുന്നേറി. തുടർന്ന് ബെൽജിയത്തെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തി ഫൈനലിലെത്തിയ അർജന്റീന, പശ്ചിമ ജർമ്മനിയെ 3–2ന് കീഴടക്കി 1986-ലെ ഫിഫ ലോകകപ്പ് കിരീടവും സ്വന്തമാക്കി.
