Weekly videos helping beatmakers get more out of their samplers and dawless gear (SP-404, Koala Sampler, Digitakt, & more).
From full beat builds to sound design and live performance, this channel is about making real music within the wonderfully weird limitations of hardware.

Portable samplers feel like they’re everywhere right now.

From the SP404, KOII, MPC Sample, even stuff like the Casio SX-C1, it feels like there’s a real shift toward smaller, faster, more immediate gear.

I’ve been thinking a lot about why that is.

Is it the limitations? The workflow? Or just the fact you can make music anywhere?

I’m working on a video about this right now, and I’m curious to hear what you think, or why you think that is. Do you prefer portable setups, or use a full DAW every time?

This year’s 404 Day got me thinking about how much the SP404 has actually evolved over time, especially with all the firmware updates. This was my first sampler, and it completely changed how I make music. It also ended up shaping this entire channel, and a lot of what I do now started with this one piece of gear.

So I put together a video looking back on it after almost 5 years of real use: what’s aged well, what’s changed, and what still drives me a little crazy.

I really appreciate all the love on this one. I saw a lot of great comments come in, but it looks like YouTube is being a bit weird right now and some of them aren’t showing up. If I missed yours, feel free to drop it again.

If you want to check it out, it’s up now:

And if you’re just getting started with the SP, or want to get more out of it, I’m running a small 404 Day sale on my cheat sheet and quick start guide.

Appreciate all the support over the years, here’s to a lot more with the SP.

I’ll also be updating the cheat sheet with the new sidechain compression once I get some time with it, it’s been a busy week.

The SP404 MK2 has had a lot of crazy updates since its release…

Which one has been the most useful for you?

After years of complicated DAWless setups, I stripped things down to a simple “One Synth, One Sampler” workflow. The minimalism was great for creativity and beats flowed quickly, but after a while I started to feel a little boxed in sonically.

I experimented with a few different solutions like mixers and MIDI routing, but eventually landed on something I hadn’t really considered before: a patchbay. Now all of my hardware stays connected and ready to go at all times, but I can still stick to the simplicity of using just one synth and one sampler at a time.

If you're building a DAWless setup, or feel option paralysis from having too much gear connected, this is one way to simplify your workflow without getting rid of all that awesome gear.
