"Funky Chu" — Uniquely 5, live at BODY&SOUL Tokyo, written by the band's drummer Yoshihito Eto. Not a standing group but a collective of five of Tokyo's most in-demand players, two saxophones out front: Kazuhiko Kondo alto, Wataru Hamazaki tenor and soprano, Yutaka Shiina piano, Yosuke Inoue bass, Eto drums.

Track 8 of 9. Her debut album was called Thaw. This piece is 春の雪解け — spring thaw.
Akane Ezawa Quartet @akaneezawa4053, live at BODY&SOUL Tokyo. Ezawa broke through internationally at the 2019 Perth International Jazz Festival, and she writes with a rich, thick-toned patience. She brought a band to match: David Bryant on piano, Takumi Awaya on bass, and Gene Jackson @jackgene on drums, who held the chair in the Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter Quartet from 1991 to 2000.
Jackson and Awaya each appear on two of the nine tracks. Nine bands, one small room, the same players turning up in it.

DANTOR @dantormx, led by guitarist and composer Daniel Torres. Mexican traditions meeting contemporary jazz and global rhythms, built around the interplay of guitar and violin. Torres also runs the music therapy programme at UNAM, and it shows in how this band plays: patient, warm, built to be listened to.
With Israel Torres on violin, Daniel Vadillo on piano and synth, Hiram Griss on drums, and Aarón Cruz on bass — one of Mexico's most recorded bassists, with Lila Downs, Ximena Sariñana and Ely Guerra among his credits.

"Don't Be Silly" — Shigeo Fukuda Trio @jazzpianist3863, live at BODY&SOUL Tokyo. Fukuda released Live@Body&Soul in 2003 and Dissonance/Body&Soul in 2008, both made on this stage. Now his own tune opens Side D of the album that documents the club's last chapter. A crystalline touch and a composer's gift for melody, with Motoi Kanamori on bass and Shingo Okudaira on drums.

Track 6 of 9. The only piece on this record with a string section.
"Determination" — THE REAL Veleria, live at BODY&SOUL Tokyo. Pianist and composer Kazuhiro Takemoto graduated top of his class from the Tokyo University of the Arts jazz programme and studied under Makoto Ozone. Here he writes for strings as well as rhythm: violins, viola and cello over piano, bass, drums and percussion. Classical texture, contemporary jazz, and nothing else on the LP sounds like it.

Track 5 of 9. The drummer spent nine years in Herbie Hancock's band.
"The Circle of Color Emotions" is Mayuko Katakura's own composition, played by her two-horn quintet at BODY&SOUL. She studied under Kenny Barron at Juilliard, won the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Piano Competition and reached the Thelonious Monk semi-finals.

Stephen Byth Quartet @stephenbyth, live at @thejazzlab1715. Byth won the 2024 National Jazz Award for saxophone at Wangaratta and the 2021 Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist. Melbourne-born, New York-based since 2023, he is home with Theo Carbo on guitar, Yunior Terry on bass and Ebs Daramola on drums — playing new material days before he records it. Hear it before the album exists.

Track 3 of 9. Same band, one instrument swapped, and the whole thing changes.
"Air of Northland" — Shunsuke Umino Acoustic Mirage Trio, live at BODY&SOUL Tokyo. Umino's Mirage Trio normally runs on organ and saxophone. Here Jun Miyakawa moves off the organ onto piano, Kunpei Nakabayashi takes the bass, and the drummer's own tune comes out warm, acoustic, deeply melodic.
Umino has played with Yosuke Yamashita, Jon Hendricks and Kosuke Mine — a drummer veterans and young players trust equally.

"Universal" — Patrick Bartley's DREAMWEAVER @PatrickBartleyMusic, live at BODY&SOUL Tokyo. The Grammy-nominated American saxophonist runs J-Music Ensemble, playing J-pop, anime and game themes as serious jazz. In Tokyo he leads a quintet to match: May Inoue @MAYINOUE guitar, Takafumi Suenaga piano, Yuji Ito bass, Hiroshi Kimura drums. Unlike anything else on the LP.
