16 April 2024, another normal day for many but a
special one for Railfans, today is the 171st anniversary of
Indian Railways, marking a significant milestone in
the nation's rich history of rail transport. This date
holds a special place in India's transportation legacy,
as it was on this day in 1853 that the first passenger
train embarked on its maiden voyage from
Boribunder to Thane, covering a distance of 34
kilometers.
The inaugural journey was a grand event, witnessed
by thousands of spectators who gathered at
Boribunder, now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The train, carrying 400
special invitees, completed the journey in 57 minutes.
This historic event was celebrated with a 21-gun
salute and a public holiday was declared to honour
the occasion.
Over the years, Indian Railways has evolved from the
Great Indian Peninsula Railway, which operated the
first train, to a vast network that spans across the
nation. The merger with the Indian Midland Railway
Company in 1900 expanded its operations.
