If you want to really understand the Strait of Hormuz, the best way is not to think of it as just a body of water. Think of it as a doorway. On one side is the Persian Gulf, bordered by some of the world’s most important oil- and gas-producing countries: Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran. On the other side is the Gulf of Oman, which opens into the Arabian Sea and then the wider Indian Ocean. Almost anything shipped out of the Persian Gulf by sea has to pass through this doorway first. That single fact explains why the strait matters so much.

Geographically, the strait lies between southern Iran to the north and Oman, with the Musandam Peninsula, an Omani exclave, to the south. At its narrowest point, the strait is only about 21 miles wide, or around 33 kilometers, though the shipping lanes used by vessels are much narrower than that. Tankers do not simply spread out across the whole passage. Instead, they move through designated traffic lanes, which makes the strait even more strategically sensitive. Historically, the importance of the area long predates modern oil. The Persian Gulf and the waters leading out of it have been significant trade routes for centuries, connecting Mesopotamia, Persia, the Arabian Peninsula, India, East Africa, and beyond. Pearling, fishing, and local trade sustained Gulf societies long before oil turned the region into a central pillar of the world economy. This is especially true because of the way commercial shipping works. Large tankers, LNG carriers, and merchant vessels depend on predictable transit schedules, navigation safety, and insurability. When people ask why the Strait of Hormuz seems to remain perpetually tense, the answer is that it sits at the overlap of several unresolved issues all at once. It is tied to U.S.-Iran rivalry, Iran-Gulf Arab tensions, global energy dependence, sanctions, nuclear diplomacy, regional proxy conflicts, and great-power competition.
